Tested Thursday: The Glossybox

tt-glossybox-thI was lucky enough recently to win a three month subscription to Glossybox, the British monthly subscription beauty box. I was happy, as I had never subscribed to any of these before, always wondering if they did really work out as value for money. I was late applying for the May box, which arrived last week, and luckily, the June box arrived today, which, for Tested Thursday, gives me a chance to compare two months side by side.

The theory behind Glossybox is quite simple. You pay for a subscription (monthly is currently £10 per box, conversion needed to Euro for a rough cost each month) and each month you get sent 5 products, typically deluxe samples, with some full sized products thrown in too. You should be able to find a product each month that you love, and get more than what you are actually paying. It sounds great, but I have always been doubtful. Some months can look amazing, while others solicit an emphatic MEH! Let’s see what was in the May & June boxes though.

May 2015:

  • SASS Intimate Perfect Skin Concentrate (30 ml sample)
  • Zerreau Towel Off Shampoo Foam (70 ml sample)
  • Etre Belle Aloe Vera Mousturising Gel (40 ml Full Size)
  • MeMeMe Enchanted Eyes Eye Pencil (Full Size)
  • Philosophy Renewed Hope in a Jar Moisturiser (7ml sample)

Seeing these products arrive in the May box made me hopeful  that all boxes would contain a healthy mix of full sized products and generous samples of products that I would want to try. The shampoo looks like a great idea, while the others invite me to at least try them. For a box to start on, this was a good one I thought!

June 2015:

  • MONU Spa Rosewood Reviving Mist (50ml sample)
  • Glossybox Flash Tattoos (Full sized product)
  • Halo Fragrance Free Facial Wipes (Travel size)
  • Kueshi Anti Cellulite Booster (Full sized product)
  • Essence XXXL Shine Lipgloss – Pretty In Hibiscus (Full sized product)

And here it all falls apart. 3 full sized products they say, including a sheet of temporary tattoos and an Essence lipgloss. I have nothing against Essence, but this is not what I was expecting. The facial wipes will end up getting used on my hands eventually as a quick tidy up product, the tattoos may sit around for ever, and the only product that I am really interested in is the MONU Spa mist.

Okay, if I’m being honest, I won this as a prize. I have not lost anything here. The May box looked impressive, but the June one was distinctly underwhelming. Come on Glossybox! You are vying for my hard earned money, and you have one month left to WOW me, because based on what I have seen so far, I am very unconvinced by the hit & miss nature of the game you are playing!

Are you a Glossybox subscriber? What did you think of recent boxes? Leave me a comment and help me make my mind up!

Tried Tuesday: Chic Treat Club

chic-thI was lucky enough to receive a message from the amazing Anita of Dolledup.ie fame last week to tell me that I had won a Chic Treat Club box. I had only ever seen these in pictures and blog posts before, so I was eager to see it “in person”, and it arrived today.

I arrived downstairs to find this carton having just arrived from DPD. It’s very sturdy and is obviously designed to carefully protect the valuable contents inside. That’s always a good start. A little tug on the cardboard tear strip had me in to the good stuff, the actual Chic Treat Club box.

I was immediately impressed by the quality of the box and it’s accompanying booklet. I especially love the weight of the box, and its magnetic catch flap. It keeps things safe while still being easy to open, while the booklet is colourful and spells out everything you need to know about the products included. I didn’t look through this first, instead choosing to open the box and find out by actually seeing everything

So, through the ribbon and tissue paper (again beautifully presented) I went…

There was actually quite a delightful mix of products in the box, which included in no particular order:

Sleek Eye Dust in Vintage. A little pot of silver grey loose pigment eyeshadow. I have used Sleek eye dusts before and they are a little powerful pot of pleasure to use.

Bia Beauty Lemon Myrtle Hand Cream. An Irish business featured in an Irish box. This generous jar of hand cream was made with love in Cork and really smells quite delicious. I am a big fan of citrus, lemony scents.

Palmers Cocoa Butter Foot Magic: Another well known and respected brand, featuring another full sized product. I really am happy with what is coming out of the box, as there is a nice selection of products to use on different parts of the body.

Waxperts Ingrown Hair Pads: Yay for another Irish business. What would nice feet be without lovely legs to match. These are a holy grail product for anyone who is waxing or shaving, and as something I have never tried before I am really looking forward to getting stuck into these.

Dream Water: This is an interesting one. It’s designed with minerals to aid relaxation and encourage a good night’s sleep. I’m not entirely sure if it will show any improvement after just 1 bottle, but I will give it a go and see.

There’s some really great products in the box, and all full size. Granted it is because of it being a special for the 6 month anniversary of Chic Treat Club, but I am still rather impressed. the good news too is that you can now sign up for a monthly subscription, instead of 3 months, which had been a bit of a stumbling block for me. I may just be signing up to receive them regularly in the future.

What do you think of Chic Treat Club? Are there any must get/must avoid beauty boxes, in your opinion? The comment line is open!
