Something Else Saturday: Holyhead Haul

ses-holyhead-thFor those of you who haven’t figured it out yet, I was in Holyhead during the week, for the fun of it really, but I did get a little chance to do some shopping. Today, for Something Else Saturday, let’s have a look at what I picked up.

MUA Undressed Palette – £4 – I really can’t get enough of neutral eye shadows, and this palette has a great mix of mattes and shimmers. I am yet to try out eyeshadows from MUA, so I will be interested in how this fares for £4.

MUA Starry Night Palette – £4 – Another palette along the lines of the Undressed one, but with more greys and darks, ideal for night out eyes. Again I look forward to trying this out and seeing what the shadows are like.

MUA Pro Base Eye Primer – £1 – I admit, I have never used a dedicated eye primer, usually favouring a cream shadow as a base. For £1, I felt there is not much to lose by giving this a go.

Trainers£20 £10 – Okay, well everyone should have a pair of trainers, for when you are just lounging about at home and don’t need to get dressed up.

Flat Shoes£22 £9 – Having been practically living in my black and white flat shoes from Penneys, they are rapidly approaching the end of their life, but these are super cute and super comfortable. Just what I need!

Heels£26 £5 – Look at the price and the shoes. How could I say no to them for just £5?!?!

Not pictured:

Eccles Cakes – My dad’s favourite cakes. I was under fairly simple instructions – “Get them or don’t come home” so I brought back 12. They lasted 24 hours. I guess I will have to go and get more at some point.

Toiletries – Again for my Dad, who has travelling to do for work over the next month. I was much better off picking the travel sizes up in Holyhead for £1 each, as opposed to €3 each over here.

Rum – £20 for a litre, and it will last me a while. This was actually bought on the ship at duty free.

So, that’s the result of my hours shopping in Holyhead, and I think I did quite well, even if I didn’t get the things I originally went looking for. I guess it just gives me a chance to go back at some point, doesn’t it!

Something Else Saturday: More Dealz Purchases

ses-dealzYes, I do like looking around in Dealz, but I have a problem. You really can’t go in there and not buy something… And something else, and that third thing because it’s only €1.49. It all gets a bit dangerous really! But, when I do buy bits in there, I do try and make it worthwhile. And so, during the week, I bought the following.

It was only 6 weeks ago that I got my hair done last time, but it is growing really well, and is back at that stage where it starts to flop down in front of my face if I’m not careful, so these barrettes should do a job of holding it back. They’re also an effective decorative piece, adding in sparkle or colour, depending on whatever mood I’m in.

Sinful Colors polishes are seriously impressive, and since finding them in Dealz, I have built up quite a collection, having amassed currently 12 of them. It seems that, if there are some on the shelf when I’m in the shop, I will buy them. The latest two to add to the collection are Cloud 9 (left) and Hot Spot (right).

I already have a couple of these L’Oreal Color Infallible eyeshadows, but, as I didn’t have any in these colours, I just had to pick them up. There is Coconut Shake (left) which is a great light neutral for brightening the eye during the day, and Purple Obsession (right) because I love purples so so much, ans it is a great intense colour.

So, that’s my recent shopping from Dealz, and all for less than €9! What do you normally look for in Dealz? Is there anything I am missing out on? Share your secrets, we’re all friends here!

Tried Tuesday: L’Oreal Glam Shine Lipgloss

tt-lipthHello from a rather wet and miserable Tried Tuesday, where today I’m talking about lips. We all have them, and we all have a drawer full of things for them, so today I’ve pulled out a former favourite of mine, a L’Oreal Glam Shine from the Miss Candy collection, in shade 703 – Tart Lollipop.

I used to wear this quite often, but sadly, in recent times it’s been neglected. How silly of me! It doesn’t have the greatest punch of colour, but it is nice and glossy (always good for a lipgloss) and doesn’t feel sticky, but rather smooth and slick on the lips.

The heart shaped applicator holds a generous amount of product, so it should do one lip at a time with ease.

Now, while L’Oreal say that these glosses have 6 hours of staying power, don’t hold your breath. If you’re going to be doing normal stuff like coffee and lunch (we all have to eat and drink)  it will wear off. If you need ore colour and staying power, I would wear it over a lip stain. If however, you are on a strict diet of nothing in public, then go right ahead and wear it on it’s own. It will give a subtle colour, and I find it does make the lips look a bit more plump and kissable. Now, where can I find someone to test that theory with?

What do you think of the Glam Shine range? Are lip glosses worth the money, or just a shiny, short lived distraction? The comment line is open!

Something Else Saturday: Recent Purchases – Penneys, Boots, Lush & Parfois

SES-HaulthumbIt’s the weekend, the sun is shining, and it’s time for another Something Else Saturday. Last week I introduced you to Rascal, the one eyed psycho cat. This week, I’m showing you the bits and pieces I’ve bought recently.

I went in to Penneys for two things. A white vest (not pictured – it’s boring) and the Wet n Wild stand. I admit, I had picked out what I wanted from the stand before I even went to Penneys, so I must have looked a little crazy with my product brochure out, going between it and the stand. I’m just a little odd like that. It did get me most of what I wanted though, so I’m not complaining too much. I also poked around the other stands, liking the look of the NYC Color Rock Muse Smoky Top Coat. It’s red and glittery and wow.

Picked up, starting from top l-r:

  • Wet n Wild ColorIcon lip liner in Plumberry
  • Wet n Wild Wild Shine in Black Creme
  • Wet n Wild Fast Dry in Sage and the City
  • Wet n Wild Fast Dry in Gray’s Anatomy
  • NYC Color Rock Must Smoky Top Coat in Red Hot
  • Wet n Wild Megalast Lipstick in Sugar Plum Fairy
  • Wet n Wild Wild Shine in Eggplant Frost
  • Wet n Wild Meglast Lipstick in Cherry Bomb
  • Wet n Wild ColorIcon Eyeshadow Trio in Silent Treatment
  • Wet n Wild ColorIcon glitter single eyeshadow in Binge
  • Wet n Wild Idol Eyes shadow pencil in Techno

Also from Penneys is a pair of exfoliating gloves. Just because they’re scrubby, body cleaningly good.

From Boots I got a set of Eyelure Naturalites super full lashes. Mainly because I had a load of receipts with Advantage Card points on, and didn’t want to queue up with just them. I’ve also only recently got the hang of lashes, so I chose to treat myself to some.

From the place of all interesting smells and colours and natural bath goodness that is Lush, I got three things, mostly not for me.

haul-brightsideFor me, I got the Brightside bubble bar. It smells gorgeous, looks like a 60’s tie-dye t-shirt, and should encourage me to make time for a bath (lock the bathroom door and to hell with everyone waiting).

For someone else, who should be receiving them next weekend, I got products that look like food. I got a bunch of carrots, which are soooo cute, and a French kiss, in all its floaty, meringue like glory. I now just need to figure out quirky packaging for them. Maybe I’ll plant the carrots, and serve the meringue with a plate of meringue. I’ll just need to put a flag on it saying don’t eat me. That wouldn’t end well.

Finally, I went in to Parfois on Mary St. I had stopped and looked in the window many times before, but never gone in. I’m not sure if I made a mistake by going in or not. There is so much loveliness in there. My old wallet has seen better days, and is starting to leech colour on to cards. Not a good look. I walked around the shop for a couple of minutes comparing wallets, before being stopped by a member of staff. She compared the tow I had in my hands with me, before asking me a couple of questions about how big I’d like my wallet to be, and recommending a cross between a wallet and a clutch.

And it was beautiful. It has space for everything and an elephant, and the member of staff was so friendly I had no problem with her upselling. And the upsell was only €2 from what I was going to buy, so it was all good. Even more, she went back and forth to the stock room 3 times to find one that had no marks or imperfections whatsoever. Customer service win right there. I may be back for more very soon.

What have you bought recently? Have I inspired you to buy anything from this post? You know what to do!

Tried Tuesday: No. 7 Stay Perfect Lipstick

Lips-thGood afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the first Tried Tuesday. The idea is simple. We all have big/HUGE/MASSIVE collections, and inevitably things get forgotten about. What I plan to do is reach into a drawer, rummage around and try whatever comes out, hoping to find love for products all over again along the way.

Lips ColourThis time it is the opportunity of No.7 Stay Perfect Lip Colour in 30 – Sweet Lips (discontinued). I can’t actually remember how this came to be in my possession, but if I remember correctly, it was in a promotion with a magazine some time ago. In the tube this looks like a very strong pink, leaning towards a berry shade in terms of its depth. That would make me immediately think of it as a more autumn/winter lipstick, when deeper, richer shades are  my preference.

lips appliedHowever, on my lips this is quite a bit lighter, and while it is a strong colour, it is not overly so, and I think it is a lovely daytime pick, as it is subtle enough to not look too overdone. I think I’ll be making use of this more often.

What do you think of this shade? Are there things hiding in your collection that deserve more love and attention? Let me know below!

New Launches: Shiseido S/S ’14

shiseido-thI’ll be honest. This post is going to make you ooh and aah, and will probably give your bank manager a heart attack. Why? It’s the gorgeous new launches from Japanese beauty giant Shiseido. Ladies (and gentlemen) prepare to want, no, NEED, everything!

Shiseido know skincare, and they employ more than 1,100 scientists to research the way skin works, and how to use skins natural mechanisms in their products. The latest results of that research have led to:

Future Solutions LX Range:

  • Superior Radience Serum (30ml/€270)
  • Total Protective Emulsion (75ml/€290)
  • Total Regenerating Body Cream (200ml/€130)

Shiseido-FSLXThese are amazing. I’m particularly enamoured by the serum. A tiny dot on the back of my hand was more than enough to cover my hand, and it sank in instantly, leaving my hand looking so much brighter. Without going into all the science of it (Pearl Hybrid Complex and Skingenecell 1P in this case) it is  like liquid light for the skin. I’m going to have to start saving my pennies for this one.

Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask (12 pack/€63)

This is an update to the well known and unbelievably popular cult product, which now features stabilised pure retinol and Makruossi Extract, which works to replump the undereye area, reducing wrinkles, fine lines and dark circles. While some people use it as a once a month treat, it is safe to use up to 3 times a week.

IBUKI Starter Set (3x30ml/€29)

I’m really looking forward to trying this one out, and even the box wants me to try it out. It even told me!

A limited edition set containing 30 ml sizes of Cleanser, Softener and Moisturiser, it is designed to give you a 2 week to 1 month introduction to the world of Shiseido Skincare.

Face Colour Enhancing Trio (4 shades/€38 ea)

The great variety of shades available really allow this to work with any skin tone, even my pasty, pale Irish skin. Containing 3 complimentary shades in each compact, which act as a blush, sculpting colour and skin harmonising colour. These also have a subtle shimmer, to add a healthy glow. A really lovely product, I can see this one disappearing very quickly.

Lacquer Rouge & Lacquer Gloss (new shades) (€26/€25)

My personal favourites from all the makeup launches, I am really in love with these. They are both super pigmented, with the Lacquer Rouge offering a deeper hit of colour, while the Lacquer Gloss is like a lip gloss plus. I need more of these in my life!

Shimmering Cream Eye Colour (8 new shades) (€29)

These are water resistant, crease resistant, and last FOREVER. After swatching them on my hands they refused to move, until I scrubbed the life out of them before going to bed. They are some of the most gorgeous cream shadows I have ever come across, and with the colours being so intense, you’ll be noticed.

Sheer Eye Zone Corrector ( 3 shades) (€30)

These at first glance look like the very familiar Touche Eclat in function, but with these the trick is to go for the one that loooks orange on your skin, as the boffins in Shiseido have discovered that everyone as they age lose red and yellow pigments from their under eye area. This puts them back in, and helps to disguise fine lines. You can also pick up the one that looks the lightest on your skin, to add highlight and radience.

Sun Care UV Protective Compact Foundation & Liquid Foundation (3 shades each) (€39) – not pictured

These foundations are perfect for holidays, as they both contain SPF30. Depending on whether you want a matte or more dewy finish you choose the compact or liquid finish. They also DO NOT MOVE! Get them wet, swim, sunbathe, whatever you need to do and it stays on your face! Result!

Perfect Hydrating BB Cream (new light shade)  (€38) – not pictured

This is definitely a “my skin but better” product, and the light shade should be excellent for most Irish skintones. It also contains SPF30 (woo!) and provides added skincare protection!

Zen Sun EdT for men, and for women (50ml/€63)

The fragrance for men is a wonderfully fresh crisp fragrance. The fragrance for women is the perfect sweet fragrance for those who hate sweet fragrances. I despise the usual, sickly sweet, sweet fragrances, but after getting one sniff of this, I MUST HAVE it. That’s the best way I can put it. I’m not really one for perfume descriptions.

For Men:

Total Revitaliser Eye (15ml/€54) – no pictured

For the man who keeps raiding your supplies, make him buy his own. This is really rich but spreads and sinks in so well. It is also  encased in sleek black packaging, so it looks perfectly masculine, and therefore ideal for the man who doesn’t want to be caught using “girly” products.

These wonderful goodies are on counter between now and May, including the new Shiseido counter in Harvey Nichols, Dundrum.

I also have some of them to try out and will be reporting back in good time to let you know how I got on.

What jumps out at you? Are you regretting reading this far? How’s your bank balance feeling? Let me know in the comments!

Best of Beauty: Hair Heroes

haircare-thWelcome to week 2 of the Best of Beauty series, organised by the amazing Sam from All the Buzz (love you Sam!) Last week was skincare saviours. Now it’s time for those things my hair couldn’t live without – my hair heroes!

Charles Worthington Full Volume Range: Shampoo (Not pictured), Conditioner, Texturising Spray:

Originally recommended to me by Paula of Cornflakegirls Musings, these are my go to products for every other day use. They add great volume to my otherwise fine hair, without weighing my hair down. Sadly I’ve run out of the shampoo and am almmost out of the conditioner, so I am on the lookout for them. They seem to have disappeared from the couple of Boots nearest to me.

L’Oreal Professionel Spiral Splendour Curl Setting Cream:

My hairdresser always uses this on my hair, as there is no point in blowdrying my hair straight. Once it gets wet it goes back to its usual frizzy self. This sets the curls into place, leaving them looking great. At home I run a little bit of this through sections of hair, scrunch the hair up, then hit it with the hairdryer. Great curls in minutes!

Honourable Mention:

Mane ‘n Tail Shampoo & Conditioner:

Yes, I know this is a free sample package of the Mane ‘n Tail. I find these great for when you’ll be away for a couple of days, as they take up no space at all. They saved my hair when I was in hospital. I’m so happy with these, that I think I will be buying full versions of them in the near future. Great stuff.

So, what do you think? Have you tried any of these, and would you recommend them? As always, the comments await!

Recent Purchases: Boots and Dealz

colorburst-thumbWhile things have been pretty slim on the buying front I have been able to treat myself now and then. For example, today I went into Boots to buy razor blades. These are more of a necessity than a treat, so they’re not included here. The rest of what I walked out with is…

Nail Polish: Maybelline Color Show in 107 – Watery Waste:

Before I begin, let me point out 2 things. Firstly, it’s ColoUr, not color. Get it right. Secondly, what were you thinking with the name “Watery Waste”? You’re not selling it to me with that name. What did sell it to me, aside from the silvery colour itself, was the big clearance sticker on it that said €2! SOLD!

Lip Crayons: Revlon Colorburst (seriously, I’m getting annoyed with the lack of U here) Lacquer and Matte Balms in 150 – Enticing (Lacquer), 220 – Showy (Matte) & 250 – Standout (Matte):

I’ve been hearing so much love for these new crayons, and with Boots having another 3 for 2 offer on, it was wrong to leave them sitting on the shelf. Normally €11.20 each the offer meant that I got them for €7.47 each instead. Bargain! In the swatches below, I’ve included the original Just Bitten Balm Stain in 020 – Lovesick for comparison.

What I’m thinking is I have nearly matching pairs here, at least on paper. Lovesick seems to be a more glossy version of Showy, and Enticing is a close match for Standout. They’re very pigmented colours though. I’m loving them already, and I haven’t even tried them on my lips yet.

Dealz Purchase:

Nail Polish: Revlon Nail Art Neon in 100 – Atomic Pink, 110 – High Voltage, 120 – Neon Light, 130 – Laser Beam & 170 – Ultra Violet:

revlon-nail-artThese were €1.49 each. I love nail polish. Enough said 😉

What have you treated yourself to recently? What else should I be buying? Are you going to fund it for me (wishful thinking)? Let me know in the comments!

I Admit It: I’m a Polishaholic

Mani-ThumbHi everyone! My name’s Robyn, and I’m a polishaholic! (cue polite applause)

It all started many years ago. I got distracted by some shiny colours while in boots and it all snowballed from there. I got sucked in, and just can’t break my habit of looking at shiny shiny polish and saying those dreaded words that we all know: “I want it. No, I MUST HAVE it!”

Shopping the Sales

jewellery_thOkay, I’ll be honest. I’m not one to go mad for the sales. You will never find me camped outside Brown Thomas overnight to be first in line on the 26th. It’s just not who I am. I will, however, go in a couple of days later, not looking for anything in particular, and pick up whatever it is I pick up. Being pretty poor this time round meant I was not going looking for designer gems, but did pick up a couple of bits and pieces, mainly from New Look and Penneys, and spurred on by Kathleen from Squidgy Moments sharing her finds on Twitter (love you my Amazingly Crazy Minion x) decided I should share them with you.
