Manicure Monday: NYC Foil Explosion Nails

mm-nyc-thIt is October. The nights are drawing in. The weather is getting worse, mostly. I am starting to root out the darker polishes that just work with this time of year. And yet, with the unseasonable (can we talk about seasons in Ireland?) warm weather, I don’t want to give up on brightness too much too soon. That is why this is a perfect polish to work with this week. This week’s Manicure Monday is from New York Colour, and is from their Foil Explosion range, called Power of Elements.

I’ve had the Foil Explosion range in my collection for a while now. I think I got them in 2013, but the internet is telling me that the set of 5 is still available. In addition to Power of Elements, this purple, there is a pink, green, blue and a copper coloured one. As you can kind of pick up from the name too, they are all a metallic foil finish. Now, let’s look at Power of Elements a little closer.

NYC, as a brand, has almost always punched well above its weight with me. There was only ever one product, a foundation, that I didn’t agree with. For a budget brand, that is good going. I would reasonably expect this to be no different. The lid fits in my hand well enough, without it being anything special, and the brush is, well, a brush. It flexes and spreads just as it should. It does the job. The polish, on the other hand, is something a bit more worthy of talking about. It is PIGMENTED! Some polishes claim to be one coat, and yeah, you would get away with it. This really is a one coat polish. From the moment it it my nails, they were colourful. Out of habit I went for a second coat, just because, but if I was in a hurry, I could go without. Then there is the finish of it…

You are buying it for the metallic foil finish, right? That is what you get, no doubt about it! It delivers what it promises, and then some. Not only that, but it has staying power too. I once did my toes with this polish, and it was still there weeks later.

When you get a pocket friendly product, sometimes you are willing to put up with it being only okay. With this one, your €2.99 (if memory serves me correctly) gets you much more than that. It can be difficult at times to impress me, but this did impress me!

Face Friday: Feeling Summery

ff-summery-thHas anyone noticed that big ball of relative warmth in the sky? Yes, the sun is here for a little while, and to celebrate the country is losing the run of itself. Myself included to a certain extent, like with this creation, which went for a mix of pinks, corals and oranges, and coordinated with my dress, nails and mac, which I wore to an event in Inglot.

Face:

  • Foundation: Max Factor – Skin Luminizer Foundation (35 Light Ivory)
  • Blush: Wet n Wild – Coloricon Blush  (E832E – Heather Silk)
  • Powder: Benefit – Hello Flawless (Ivory)
  • Highlighter: Benefit – High Beam

Eyes:

  • Brows: Maybelline– Brow Drama (Medium Brown)
  • Primer: Makeup Revolution – Focus & Fix Primer (Brighten)
  • Shadow: NYC – Metro Quartet Shadow (797B – Gothic Harlem)
  • Liner: Cailyn Cosmetics – idefine Liquid Eyeliner
  • Mascara: Physicians Formula – Organic Wear Fakeout Mascara (the pink one)

Lips:

  • Lipstick: Wet n Wild – Megalast Lipstick (E909B – Coral-ine)
  • Lipgloss: Kardashian Beauty – Tuesday Lipgloss (Orange Blossom Honey 321)

Brushes:

  • Cailyn Cosmetics – O! Wow Brush – Foundation
  • Blank Canvas – F16 – Powder
  • Real Techniques – Buffing Brush – Blush
  • Blank Canvas – E23 – Shadow (crease)
  • Royal & Langnickel – Taklon Shader Brush – Shadow (lid, browbone & blend)
  • Blank Canvas – L29 – Lips

Pinks and corals feel so summery to me, so I am happy to get a bit of a change from the deeper shades of winter. The lips turned out well, being coraly orange without being an over the top orange shade, which only some people can get right!

Face Friday: Ziaja Event Face

ff-ziaja-thYesterday evening I was lucky enough to attend an event in town, celebrating 25 years of Ziaja Skincare, along with some wonderful bloggers, customers and hosted by the amazing Emma of Mastering Your Makeup fame. Naturally I couldn’t go looking like I had been dragged through a hedge backwards, so I got myself tidied up, put on my face and off I went.

Face:

  • Foundation: Maybelline – Fit Me Foundation (125 Nude Beige) and SuperStay 24 Hour Foundation (020 – Cameo)The Fit Me decided to run out half way through my face, and the pump splattered foundation all over a white top. Had to go back with the superstay and blend it all together
  • Blush: NYC – Cheek Glow Blush (649 – Prospect Park Rose)
  • Powder: Maybelline – Fit Me Powder (125 – Nude Beige)

Eyes:

  • Brows: NYX – Brow Cake Powder (04 – Auburn/Red)
  • Undereye: Shiseido – Sheer Eye Zone Corrector (103 – Natural)
  • Primer: Makeup Revolution – Focus & Fix Primer (Brighten)
  • Shadow: Physicians Formula – Shimmer Strips Nude Palette (03 all over lid, 04 crease, 08 browbone, 09 inner corner) shades numbered from left to right of palette
  • Liner: Paese – Liquid Eyeliner
  • Mascara: Max Factor – Masterpiece Glamour Extensions Mascara

Lips:

  • Lipliner: Wet n Wild – Coloricon Liner (E715 Plumberry) applied to outer part of lips
  • Lipliner: Revlon – Colorstay Liner (red) applied to inner part of lips
  • Lipstick: L’Oreal – Color Riche Collection Privee Reds (Blake’s Red)

Brushes:

  • Blank Canvas – F20 – Foundation
  • Blank Canvas – F16 – Powder
  • Real Techniques – Buffing Brush – Blush
  • Blank Canvas – E23 – Shadow (crease & inner corner)
  • Royal & Langnickel – Taklon Shader Brush – Shadow (lid, browbone & blend)
  • Blank Canvas – L29 – Lips

I tried to keep  lot of things neutral, letting the red lip do all the talking. I also tried to do the deeper shade around the edge of the lips to make them look fuller thing, but the lipstick is just so pigmented it didn’t do much. I love the red anyway, and will have to try again with a nude shade.

Face Friday: Neutral and Intense

face-pf-thToday’s face is an application of one common rule, if you do an intense eye, do a neutral lip, and vise versa. For this, I chose to give some of the lovely, but neutral bits from Physicians Formula a go on the eye and face, and pair it with a strong, intense berry lip, which came from NYC.

Face Friday: New Product Face

ff-newproducts-thThere’s a box of new products sitting next to me, and it’s always getting filled up with different bits and pieces. Things I’ve bought, things I’ve won, things I’ve been given to try out, you get the idea. So, today, for Face Friday, I’m doing a new product face, to try and work through a few of them and give them a whirl.

ff-newproducts-items

Products used:

Face:

Tinted Moisturiser: MeMeMe Cosmetics Flawless Tinted Moisturiser (02 – Beige Blush) I’m rather impressed by this. Normally, when I see something labelled beige I skip right over this in favour of its sister that says milk bottle. However, as I didn’t have a choice in shade I gave it a whirl and it matches my skin extremely well, if slightly more yellow than I want. It also sinks in well and leave my skin looking bare faced but better.

Blush: NYC Cheek Glow (649 – Prospect Park Rose) This is really quite sheer, but buildable if you so wish. It does, as the name suggests, leave a glow on your cheeks, again bare faced but better.

Bronzer: Wet n Wild Coloricon Bronzer (E740 – Bikini Contest) I normally use its sister (Ticket To Brazil) for contouring, but here used it all over the face to give a bit more of a sunkissed look. A light hand is required though, or you will, like I did, have to go back and start again.

Eyes:

Brows: Maybelline Brow Drama (Medium Brown) The only not new item on this face, but only because I have no new brow items to try out. You know my views on this.

Shadow: butter LONDON Wink Cream Eye Shadow (Sun Kiss) This comes in a tube with an applicator like a liquid lipstick. It is quite wet and spreads about well, but dries solid. The colour here doesn’t work as a shadow on its own, but my intention was to use its subtle shimmer to just brighten the eyes, and it works for that.

Mascara: Rimmel ScandalEyes by Kate Mascara (004 Eye Rocks Jet Black) The funky “broken heart” shaped wand looks weird, but its dense bristles helped the mascara to glide on nicely, adding length and volume.

Lips:

Lipstick: Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet (05 Olé Flamingo) The only item that is meant to look made up on the face, this works perfectly to deliver that stand out feature. It is rich, creamy, and while it dries to a matte finish, it at no point felt drying on my lips (though I had put on a good dose of lip balm shortly before) I think I’m in love with this.

And the finished look goes something like this…

ff-newproducts

I did have to up the exposure of the image in photoshop a little, to try and bring the colours back to what they look like in real life, as the light was playing with the camera a little. That said, I am really happy with how the pared back, natural features of the face allow the lips to be the stand out in the look. It did not need anything else or it would have looked overdone.

What do you think? Does it inspire you to try out anything new? Let me know.
