As un-Eurovision as they come, and yet he won!

Waffle Wednesday: It’s Eurovision Season

ww-eurovision-thI’ll be completely honest. I’m one of those weird, totally insane people that adores the Eurovision. It is not often you get the whole of Europe coming together to make a prat of themselves. The pagentry, the off the wall songs (anyone want to bake a cake with Latvia?) and the super cheesy presenters make it such a unique experience. I’m not sure if anything like it exists anywhere else in the world.

Okay, there are some ¬†things I dislike about it. Political voting for example. I find it funny that we went from a jury of “experts” deciding which was the best song, to a jury of experts voting politically, to a televote, where the public voting for the best song inevitably ended up with political voting, that we now have a combined jury/public vote. Things do seem to be changing in that the past handful of years one of the best songs has won, but sometimes it does feel like a bit of a setup, where we don’t have a runaway winner. This could just be cynical me talking here though.

It also wouldn’t be Eurovision without mentioning the country that I’m proud to call myself a part of (sometimes), Ireland. For a country that used to be so expert at sending Eurovision acts that the EBU nearly had permanent offices here, we have gone seriously downhill. Recently we’ve sent some okay acts, not spectacular, including a pair of twins (twice – so we sent 4 of them) who were chosen for their popularity, and for some inconceivable reason, a turkey. I’ll never understand that. I thought we had learned our lesson with Linda Martin. I do kind of miss the heyday of Irish Eurovision, knowing my parents were in the second row in the Point back when a quaint little Irish Dancing number first appeared, and Rock and Roll Kids romped home. They were close enough to the stage to see that Charlie McGettigan still had a price sticker on his shoe.

As un-Eurovision as they come, and yet he won!

As un-Eurovision as they come, and yet he won!

Finally, I do think that the whole thing is getting just too big. I know that Europe is one big inclusive family, but a line needs to be drawn. Even Morocco entered in 1980. Last time I checked, Morocco was in Africa. Next year in fact, I believe the Vatican is entering Pope Francis and the Irish Singing Priest (My Lovely Horse) while I plan on taking over a plot of land, declaring independence and then entering myself. Sure, what’s the worst that could happen?

But for all its faults, I’ll still be watching Eurovision all week, listening to older songs, and generally getting in the spirit. I’ll also be livetweeting on Thursday and Saturday, like I did on Tuesday, and some of the comments that people come up with are pure gold. If it’s not your thing though, please do let me know in a comment that you’re muting me on Twitter, and I’ll see you next week.

The Studio - where the music happens.

Waffle Wednesday: Working With Radio Active Ireland

ww-radioactive-thI’m a big fan of music. Anyone familiar with the blog will know that I have quite an eclectic musical taste, and enjoy listening to nearly, well, everything. I’m also a fan of helping out organisations and charities when I can, and fortunately I’ve found a way to combine both, in the form of Radio Active Ireland.

Radio Active launched in 2012, and broadcasts online, offering a mix of charity promotion, healthy living, mindfulness and great music, staffed solely by volunteers – as the tagline says “Sounding Great and Doing Good“. I was lucky enough over Easter to visit the station for a chat with Mark, the station manager, and to run off a demo show. All going well, I’ll soon be doing a regular show, sharing my love of music, and giving something back by helping to promote charities. It is actually something I’m looking forward to, as I adore sharing my musical taste with people and hearing what music they enjoy listening to, along with getting a good message out there.

The Studio – where the music happens.

Radio Active Ireland are always looking for volunteers to help out in any way they can. Even if you’re too shy or not confident enough to do something on air, you could always help out in the background, helping with the website, with research and PR, or with social media. If it’s something you may be interested in doing, please do let me know, or contact the station directly, on Facebook, Twitter, or by sending an email.

Also, please do tell me, if you would be so kind, what is your favourite kind of music? Your favourite artist, or your favourite musical era? (I’m an easy listening, female vocalist and 80’s girl myself) Or conversely, is there a kind of music you just can’t stand listening to? The comments are open.

The Playlist: 01 March

NoteHappy weekend all! Let’s do something different for the weekend, rather than my usual beauty and life ramblings, and that means the return of The Playlist!

For those of you not familiar with the playlist, it’s very simple. I love music, and for a while worked as an online DJ. I even met an ex girlfriend that way. For these posts, I open up my music player, hit play, and share the first 5 songs that come out with you, with Youtube videos to match. And this time the 5 are:

1: Material Girl – Madonna:

My music player has a sense of irony it seems. What better song for a beauty blogger is there?

2: Stand and Deliver – Adam & The Ants:

And then it follows up with this. Eclectic much?

3: Under My Skin – Gin Wigmore:

I was first turned on to this song when Air New Zealand used it in an advert and in-flight safety video, featuring body painted staff. Maybe that’s why I like this song so much.

4: The Chain – Ingrid Michaelson:

The melody in this song hits me every time, and gets better the further you go into it. Incidentally, if the voice sounds familiar, another one of her songs is currently being used on a TV advert by Allianz.

5: Paint It Black – The Rolling Stones:

It’s The Rolling Stones. Enough Said.

So, want to join in? Go to the comments, make fun of my playlist, or pick 5 random songs from yours and post them for me!

Playlist: 23 March

Musical NoteIt’s been so long since I’ve posted a playlist. For those of you who are new to my playlists, let me explain a little. I have quite a love of music, and thanks to being a former internet radio DJ, I have a bit of a collection. For my playlists I hit shuffle and let my music player spit out 5 songs, which I then share with you. Your duty by reading this is to tell me what you think of my musical tastes and hopefully recommend something else for me to listen to. Keep in mind that even though I missed most of it, I am an 80’s girl. So, after the jump you will find my (possibly dodgy) musical taste.

What if: The Dail Was a Glee Club

dail-gleeInspired by a post on Facebook from the wonderful Paula (check out her blog, by the way), this explores the very big what if, of the Dail being a Glee Club. Seriously, who would take what part? Would Enda and Eamon do a duet? What would be sung? Just for fun, here’s what I think would happen…

Playlist – 27 June

music noteOkay, before i get on with the playlist, first, an apology. I know I have been a bit quiet on the blog front for the past couple of weeks. I really should be writing something every day, or every couple of days, but I couldn’t inspire myself to do it. I am back now, and will be updating the blog regularly. I promise!

Playlist – 07 June

music noteWow my playlist can get mixed up at times. I’m not sure what to make of this five. It is one of the most eclectic mixes I have seen in a long time. As usual, links to Youtube are provided where I can find suitable links.

Playlist – 03 June

music noteI am quite a music fan, but I have a somewhat eclectic taste in music. Currently I have a library of over 18,000 tracks on the computer. I plan on regularly taking 5 random tracks that my player spits out, and sharing them with you, with Youtube links to them if I can find them.

So, my playlist 5 for 03 June are:
