Manicure Monday: Red and Gold

mm-red-gold-thI said during Face Friday last week that there was a red and gold manicure to go with my red and gold face, and true to my word, here we are. As we all know, red and gold are perfect festive colours, and I’ve combined the two here into an alternative French Manicure.

The colours chosen for this manicure are ones I’ve never used before. The red, a shade called Tate from Nails Inc. came free with the December issue of Glamour, while the gold is from Collection’s Work the Colour Nail Polish range and is shade 18, Going For Gold. After basecoating my nails with CND Stickey, my basecoat of choice, I applied three coats of Tate to all except for my ring finger, which got an equal number of coats of Going For Gold. I could have gotten away with two coats each, but in order to build up such a deep intensity of colour I thought three would be better suited (that and it’s the magic number).  I then took a modelling paintbrush, and working with the gold, freehanded French Tips onto the red nails, before adding a second coat to ensure a good solid colour. I would have used tip guides, and then the brush that comes with the polish, but I didn’t have any and wanted to challenge myself a little. Finally, I did the opposite over the gold, but instead of a French tip, I did a half moon in red.

Both polishes were really lovely to work with, with the brushes covering the nails evenly, and the polish spreading and moving with no dragging, leaving behind beautifully smooth coats. I’d happily work with the polishes again and again, such is my love for how well they applied.

Finally, let us have a look at the finished result. Pictures, as always, are taken with and without flash, and are presented for your viewing pleasure, firstly without flash.

I am super impressed with how this turned out. Okay, my French tips could have been just that little bit tidier, but the colours work so harmoniously, that I’m not overly concerned by the tips. The contrasting red on gold just serves to do something different, but works in its own right. What do you think of them?

Manicure Monday: Sunshine Nails

mm-sunshine-thIt’s another Monday, and as always that means it’s time for another manicure. I wasn’t planning on painted nails for today (until the hospital cancelled on me again) so I was looking for something quick and simple to do. I also wanted to play up the fact that it was late September and still bright and sunny outside, so I went for a simple sunshine manicure.

This one was so unbelievably simple to do. I started off with a bright blue sky, provided in the form of a Spoiled by Wet n Wild polish (S050 – First Class Only) over all nails.Unfortunately the polish isn’t brilliantly pigmented so it took a bit of effort to get it to a good solid colour, but I did manage it eventually. Then, taking another Spoiled by Wet n Wild polish (S036 – Designated Driver) and a fine paint brush I added in the sun as an accent on my ring finger. That way, even if it went cloudy for a while I would have the sun with me.

And this is how it looks. It’s nothing special, but it did what I wanted it to do, as it lifted my mood. I may have to root through my polishes looking for something a bit more pigmented next time, as trying to lay down enough polish to get a good colour makes it more difficult to be exact, but I’m not going to argue too much about it.

Manicure Monday: Rich & Decadent

mm-decadantthToday’s mani was inspired by a request from Amy from Red Lips; Red Hair, who responded to my request on Twitter for ideas. She suggested purple and gold, and Amy, you got it!

This was simplicity itself. A straight purple on 4 nails, and the fifth I did from a gold glitter top coat. I was tempted to go with purple on all 5, with a single coat of glitter as an accent, but hey, if you’re going to bling it up, really go for it. No half measures allowed with bling!

The colours used were Wet n Wild Eggplant Frost, from their Wild Shine range, and a No. 7 gold glitter top coat, which I got as part of a Christmas set in January.

This was also my first time using Eggplant Frost, and I’m already in love with the colour. It’s gorgeous, deep, and applied so easily. Must get more!

What do you think? Is this mani rich and decadent, or is it getting too bright to be wearing such deep colours? I may break out much lighter, brighter ones for next week.

Best of Beauty: Beauty Treatment

NOTD-French-ThumbIt’s week 7, the penultimate week of the Best of Beauty Challenge, organised by the amazing Samantha, blogger extraordinare of All the Buzz. We’ve talked about skin, hair, pamper products, princess and bargain buys, and now it’s the turn of our favourite beauty treatments.

There’s only one thing that springs to mind when I think about favourite beauty treatments, and that is anything to do with a mani or pedi. Whether it’s with polish, gel, or a shellac style hybrid I’m all over it. There is nothing more relaxing than having your hands and feet preened, pampered and polished by experts, leaving you to feel like a goddess. It is honestly one of the nicest feelings in the world, even if I also collect polish and like doing things myself.

Perfect Match Mani

I’ll have  to add to this, that given a choice I would always go for a shellac style mani or pedi. Gels and acrylics are great and last for ages, but they require lots of maintenance and can look so overly artificial (but I have had some good ones before) while regular polish suffers from the dreaded chip and smudge effect, which is a bit of a downer after a lovely treatment. Shellac style is the best of both, and while it looks amazing for the couple of weeks you have it, is easy to replace.

What are your favourite beauty treatments? Are you a mani girl like myself, or do you prefer facials, peels, or waxing. Please do share below!
