Tried Tuesday: L’oreal Color Riche Blake’s Red

tt-loreal-thEvery woman should have a go to red lipstick. It’s that simple. It looks classic and elegant, and you don’t really need much else to go with it. So, after their Color Riche Collection Priveé nudes collection, each named after a celebrity and to flatter a particular skintone, they gave the same treatment to reds, this time called Collection Exclusive. So, I picked one up, and today I am sharing Blake’s Red with you.

loreal-tube

There are four in the Collection Exclusive range, two for warm tones, and two for cool tones, and are inspired by Eva Longoria, Blake Lively, Julianne Moore & Liya Kebede. All ate described as matte but hydrating. I’m a cool toned person, but I am not one to stick to the rules, so I went for the one that called to me the most, and that was Blake’s Red.

loreal-colour

Blake’ Red is described as a pure ruby red that is designed to suit warm skintones, with a matte finish and hydrating texture. Looking at it in the tube you can see why it was drawing me to it. It is such an intense colour, that acts effectively as a siren song, dragging beauty lovers to it. I saw it, and couldn’t wait for it to be mine! And so it came to be mine, so I can show you how it looks on the lips.

loreal-lipsHere I have it on over a Revlon red lipliner, and I am very impressed with it. It is super super pigmented, applies beautifully with a brush and lasts! The claims about hydrating texture are a bit off though. It is a matte. It will dry your lips somewhat, and you should make sure your lips are in good shape first. I do love it though.

I’m now tempted to hunt down Liya’s red though. It is the cool toned sister of this, and I would be interested to put them to the test to see just how it compares. Coupled with the fact that as a beauty blogger, I can never have enough red llipsticks!

Face Friday: Magazine Inspired Red & Gold Christmas Look

ff-redgold-thLast week, while reading through a magazine, I saw two looks that combined elements of red & gold. It stuck with me, and I wondered if I could create something of a Christmas party look inspired by it. Well, I gave it a go, and the results are here for you today for Face Friday.

inspiration

Here are the looks that I drew inspiration from, which come from the December issue of Cosmopolitan. I was particularly taken by two elements, the gold eyes from the left, and the gold cupids bow and red lips on the right. It’s these elements that I wanted to combine into one look, so after scrubbing, cleansing, toning, moisturising and putting on a ton of lip balm, I went through my collection and took out the following to be used in creating the look:

Face:

  • Primer: Benefit – The Porefessional
  • Foundation: Max Factor – Skin Luminizer Foundation (40 – Light Ivory)
  • Blush: Benefit – Benetint
  • Blush: Benefit – Hervana
  • Highlighter: MeMeMe – Beat The Blues (Pearl Pink)
  • Contour: Wet n Wild – Coloricon Bronzer (E740 – Bikini Contest)
  • Powder: Benefit – Hello Flawless (Ivory)
  • Concealer: Benefit – FakeUp (01 – Light)

Eyes:

  • Brows: NYX – Eyebrow Cake Powder (04 – Auburn/Red)
  • Primer: Makeup Revolution – Focus + Fix Primer (Brighten)
  • Pigment: Barry M – Fine Glitter Dust (10 – Yellow Gold)
  • Shadow: Makeup Revolution – Awesome Eyeshadow Collection (Various Golds & Silver)
  • Liner: Paese – Liquid Eyeliner (Black)
  • Mascara: Physicians Formula – Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara (Fakeout)

Lips:

  • Lipliner: Revlon – Colorstay Liner (Red)
  • Lipstick: L’Oreal – Color Riche Lipstick (297 – Red Passion)
  • Gold Lip Line: Essence – Effect Eyeliner (02 – Gold Digger) topped with Barry M – Fine Glitter Dust (10 – Yellow Gold)

Brushes:

  • Blank Canvas – F20 – Foundation
  • Blank Canvas – F16 – Powder
  • Real Techniques – Setting Brush – Blush (Apply/Blend)
  • Real Techniques – Pointed Foundation Brush – Apply Contour
  • Blank Canvas – F03 – Blend together blush/highlighter/contour
  • Blank Canvas – E24, E25, E32 – Shadows
  • Blank Canvas – E30 – Undereye shadow/comb lashes
  • Ecotools – Angled Liner Brush – Brows
  • Blank Canvas – L29 – Lipstick
  • Emite Make Up – L312 – Pigment on upper lip line

That is quite a list of products and brushes to work through, but Christmas is a time for going all out. And to answer the question of what all of this gets you in the end, here it is:

lip

Now, I’ll freely admit I was a little forgetful, and forgot to do photos using flash, which is a pity, as it would really show off the eyes. The glitter pigment used will really make your eyes sparkle, and the combination of red and gold is a classic. The addition of silver in the corner of the eyes added another dimension to them, giving a bit more colour depth, while the mascara created great lashes without resorting to potentially over the top falsies. The only thing I am slightly concerned about is the gold along the top lip, which may have benefited from a liquid gold. I felt that in the minute amount I used, it was just slightly lacking. Not awful looking, but not stand out. I think that once I have somewhere to go that isn’t a hospital, I will be redoing this look and actually showing it off. In fact, I may just have the perfect matching manicure to show off for you on Monday.

What do you think of this look? Would you go for a gold lined lip, or should it be left to editorial makeup? And am I using enough glitter? The comments await!

Face Friday: Metallic Eyes

ff-eyes-thOn Tuesday I was looking at the Sleek Eye Dust in Vintage, and was thinking that working with other metallic colours would be ideal for this, really making the eyes intense. So, for this slightly delayed Face Friday (I have a spot that refused to behave yesterday, ick) I decided to give it a go and see what I could do.

First up, let’s take a look at the products used:

products

Face:

  • Foundation: Maybelline – Fit Me Foundation (125 – Nude Beige)
  • Powder: Physicians Formula – Season to Season Bronzer, all over face (summer shade used as contour on nose)
  • Concealer: Benefit – FakeUp (Light)
  • Blush: Benefit – Hervana
  • Highlighter: MeMeMe – Beat The Blues (Pearl Pink)

Eyes:

  • Brows: Benefit – Brow Zings (Medium)
  • Shadow: Benefit – Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow – Base (Birthday Suit)
  • Shadow: Sleek – Eye Dust – Centre Lid (Vintage)
  • Shadow: Urban Decay – Naked 2 Palette – Inner Eye (Chopper)
  • Shadow: Urban Decay – Naked 2 Palette – Crease (YDK)

brushes

Brushes:

  • Blank Canvas – F20 – Foundation
  • Real Techniques – Multi Task Brush – Blush
  • Ecotools  – Powder Brush – Powder
  • Blank Canvas – F03 – Highlighter blend
  • Blank Canvas – E25 – Shadow (base)
  • Blank Canvas – E32 – Shadow (centre lid)
  • Blank Canvas – E24 – Shadow (inner lid)
  • Blank Canvas – E23 – Shadow (crease)
  • Real Techniques – Essential Crease Brush – Shadow (outer lid)
  • Royal & Langnickel – C260 Taklon Shadow Brush – Shadow (Browbone, tear duct & final blend)
  • Real Techniques – Fine Liner Brush – Eyeliner

And finally, let’s have a look at the finished product, both with and without flash.

Face without flash:

And with:

Eyes without flash:

And finally with:

eyes-flash

There is so much that I am happy with about this look. I really love the nude glossy lip, which looks nicely made up without taking anything from the eye, and the highlighter added to the glowing skin in all the right places. The eyes are the stars of the show though. I wanted them to be quite intense, so that they really stood out, and once I perfect the eyeliner flick, and practice smoky eyes a bit more, I think this will be a really spectacular look. What do you think?

Face Friday: Intense and Neutral

intense and neutral thumbLast week for Face Friday, I did a neutral eye with an intense berry lip. This week, I’m doing the opposite, by keeping the lip neutral, instead going for an intense eye. Again it is following the common rule of emphasising either the lips or eyes, but not both. Remember though that some rules are made to be broken, so feel free to experiment.

Face Friday: The Fast Face

fff-fastth“This is for the woman who only has four fifths of a second to get ready” – Homer Simpson.
Fortunately, I don’t have a Simpsons style makeup gun, but I, like others, have often ended up in situations where I have no time to get ready, but still have to. That’s why, for Face Friday today, I’m doing the Fast Face. The idea being to use products I have, to get myself looking presentable in as short a time as possible, and to show off the result. Scared? Me too…

The clock starts now…

ff-Face

Face: Three products used.

  • BB Cream: Osiris Avise BB Cream in light (I got this one in Dealz, but they’re usually available in Lidl) Applied with fingers.
  • Powder: Benefit Hello Flawless in Ivory. Applied with the included brush
  • Blush: Benefit Hervana. Applied with the included brush

Time taken: Approx 2:38, mostly on the BB cream.

FF-Eyes

Eyes: Three Products used.

  • Shadow: Accessorize baked shadow duo in Freya. Applied with an Ecotools Fluffy Shadow Brush
  • Brows: Maybelline Brow Drama in Medium Brown. Applied with the included brush
  • Mascara: NYC High Definition Mascara. Applied with the included brush

Time taken: Approx 2:15

FF-Lips

Lips: Two products used.

  • Base colour: Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain in Passion. Applied using marker tip from tube
  • Gloss: L’Oreal Glamshine in Tart Lollipop (from Miss Candy Collection). Applied with included applicator

Time taken: Approx 1:13

Total time taken: 6:06.63 start to finish

And the result looks like.

ff-done

It’s definitely not the best I’ve done, but it is also definitely passable. I specifically chose products that were virtually foolproof, and for the most part could be applied with fingers or an included applicator. The only exception being the eyeshadow, which needed a brush. Having a plan to do a face in double quick time is always a plus, and can get you out of a few tight spots. Of course this can be trimmed down a bit further, if for example, you are willing to do your lips on the go.

What do you think? How fast can you do a fast face, and do you have any tips? I’d love to find out in the comments.

Tried Tuesday: L’Oreal Glam Shine Lipgloss

tt-lipthHello from a rather wet and miserable Tried Tuesday, where today I’m talking about lips. We all have them, and we all have a drawer full of things for them, so today I’ve pulled out a former favourite of mine, a L’Oreal Glam Shine from the Miss Candy collection, in shade 703 – Tart Lollipop.

I used to wear this quite often, but sadly, in recent times it’s been neglected. How silly of me! It doesn’t have the greatest punch of colour, but it is nice and glossy (always good for a lipgloss) and doesn’t feel sticky, but rather smooth and slick on the lips.

tt-wand

The heart shaped applicator holds a generous amount of product, so it should do one lip at a time with ease.

tt-lips

Now, while L’Oreal say that these glosses have 6 hours of staying power, don’t hold your breath. If you’re going to be doing normal stuff like coffee and lunch (we all have to eat and drink)  it will wear off. If you need ore colour and staying power, I would wear it over a lip stain. If however, you are on a strict diet of nothing in public, then go right ahead and wear it on it’s own. It will give a subtle colour, and I find it does make the lips look a bit more plump and kissable. Now, where can I find someone to test that theory with?

What do you think of the Glam Shine range? Are lip glosses worth the money, or just a shiny, short lived distraction? The comment line is open!

(Extremely Rare) FOTD, Just Because

FOTD-thAs a rule, I hate pictures of myself. They just never look nice enough to me. However, on rare occasions, I hit upon a good one. And in this case, I think it’s a really good one. That’s why I’m sharing an extremely rare FOTD with you, though at this stage it’s more like a Face of 2 days ago. Anyway, never mind that. Lets get on to the more interesting bit of products used.

FOTD-Bg

Face:

  • Primer: GOSH – Velvet Touch Line Perfector
  • Primer: Benefit – The Porefessional (used on nose)
  • Foundation: Maybelline – SuperStay 24 Hour Foundation (020 – Cameo)
  • Bronzer: Wet ‘ Wild – Coloricon Bronzer (Ticket to Brazil)
  • Blush: Benefit – Hervana
  • Concealer: Benefit – FakeUp (light)
  • Powder: 17 – Loose Powder (translucent)

Eyes:

  • Brows: Maybelline – Brow Drama (Medium Brown)
  • Shadow: Benefit – Creaseless Cream Shadow (Birthday Suit)
  • Shadow: No. 7 – Stay Perfect Eye Shadow (Truffle)
  • Liner: L’Oreal – Gel Intenza Liner (02 – Golden Black)
  • Mascara: Benefit – They’re Real

Lips:

  • Gloss: Shiseido – Lacquer Gloss (RD305 – Lust)

Brushes:

  • Blank Canvas – F20 – Foundation
  • Blank Canvas – F03 – Powder
  • Real Techniques – Setting Brush – Bronzer (contour)
  • Ecotools – Powder Brush – Bronzer & Blush
  • Blank Canvas – E23 – Cream Eyeshadow
  • Royal & Langnickel – Silk Taklon Shadow C260 – Powder Eyeshadow
  • Blank Canvas – E28 – Liner
  • Blank Canvas – E30 Spoolie end – comb lashes between mascara coats
  • Blank Canvas – L29 – Lip brush (shape & definition)

Thinking about it, that’s quite a list for a doing nothing in particular face, but I like how it worked out.

Any thoughts? Anyone? Feel free to  tell me not to show my face on my blog again in the comments.

Best of Beauty: Hair Heroes

haircare-thWelcome to week 2 of the Best of Beauty series, organised by the amazing Sam from All the Buzz (love you Sam!) Last week was skincare saviours. Now it’s time for those things my hair couldn’t live without – my hair heroes!

Haircare-1

Charles Worthington Full Volume Range: Shampoo (Not pictured), Conditioner, Texturising Spray:

Originally recommended to me by Paula of Cornflakegirls Musings, these are my go to products for every other day use. They add great volume to my otherwise fine hair, without weighing my hair down. Sadly I’ve run out of the shampoo and am almmost out of the conditioner, so I am on the lookout for them. They seem to have disappeared from the couple of Boots nearest to me.

L’Oreal Professionel Spiral Splendour Curl Setting Cream:

My hairdresser always uses this on my hair, as there is no point in blowdrying my hair straight. Once it gets wet it goes back to its usual frizzy self. This sets the curls into place, leaving them looking great. At home I run a little bit of this through sections of hair, scrunch the hair up, then hit it with the hairdryer. Great curls in minutes!

haircare-2

Honourable Mention:

Mane ‘n Tail Shampoo & Conditioner:

Yes, I know this is a free sample package of the Mane ‘n Tail. I find these great for when you’ll be away for a couple of days, as they take up no space at all. They saved my hair when I was in hospital. I’m so happy with these, that I think I will be buying full versions of them in the near future. Great stuff.

So, what do you think? Have you tried any of these, and would you recommend them? As always, the comments await!

My first, and possibly only FOTD

FOTD-ThumbFirst, a note: I am not that photogenic, specifically when it comes to self portraiture. I always find myself unhappy with how it looks, whether it’s the angle, lighting, or how many chins I appear to have. Therefore, make the most of this post, as it will be a while, if ever, before it’s repeated. So, if you want to continue, my first FOTD (Face Of The Day) is after the jump.

Spotted: Gift With Purchase: L’oreal Nail It, Wing It Gloss It

L'oreal-thumbWhile browsing in Boots today (I was out, there was a Boots, and I had time to kill – don’t judge me) I noticed some interesting boxes on the display from L’Oreal – a gift with purchase, worth €36, when you spend €22 or more.

Seeing as I had been wanting the Tart Lollipop GlamShine Gloss from their new candy collection, it would have been a shame to pass on it.
