Tried Tuesday: Sleek MakeUP Matte Me Lipstick – Rioja Red

tt-sleek-thYou may have heard of Sleek MakeUP. For such a long time it has been a brand often heard of, but not often seen. That was a pity, as their products have always been great quality at a great price. Here on Robyn Rants and Raves, we are fans of the well known i-Divine Palettes, and the overly tinted, super powerful Pout Polishes. Well today I have another product to try out. It is one of their Matte Me Lipsticks, and is in the shade Rioja Red.

matte me tube

Rioja Red is one of six in the range, and has the usual suspects of nudes, pinks and a very interesting looking purple in addition to this red. The tube, in line with most Sleek products is very understated. The only way you know who makes it, aside from picking it up from a Sleek stand is to look closely at the contrasting black on black of the lid. I am a big fan of products that aren’t overly showy, especially if they are able to back it up with something to make you go wow. Does this do so, or does it fall flat?

matte me wand

As you can see from the wand, the product is amazingly pigmented, and well, a little shiny. It also looks smooth and silky, which is a good sign. Mattes tend to be very dry, and some can look dry even directly from the tube. This doesn’t. It invites use. The flat sided wand makes it a doddle to apply, and carries a lot of product. I somehow don’t think you will need to go applying multiple coats of this.

matte me swatch

Here is a simple swatch of colour on the back of my hand, so it has been spread a bit, and you can clearly see just how vibrant the colour is. While some products can look highly pigmented until you spread it out, this one delivers in a very impressive way. It also looks shiny here, but that is my fault. I took the photo of this swatch too soon after applying it to my hand, which didn’t allow it any drying time. But, to make up for it, let me show you the finished look.

matte me lips

Now in all of its matte gloriousness! This is it after it has set, and with a couple of stray marks from where I tried to tidy up a little (pro tip: clean it up before it has a chance to dry!). If you are thinking it looks a little orange, you are right. It is an orange toned red. I wouldn’t let that put you off though. While it is not my perfect red, I would wear this! You do need to give it a little respect, as it is a matte, and mattes are drying, but this is not overly so. If you take good care of your lips (and you should) you will not have much of an issue with this.

These are available online and through selected pharmacies (but to make life easier an interactive stockist finder is here) for a pocket friendly price of just €6.49! Now, bring me Fandango Purple, next on my list!

Tried Tuesday: Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipstick

tt-marykay-thLast Thursday I was introduced to a new (to me) brand of makeup, skincare and fragrance, that’s big in the States, and worldwide really. Yet, it’s always been a name that hasn’t stuck in my head, that you may see it briefly mentioned in a magazine and move on to the next thing. Yet I’m glad I was introduced to it, as there are some really interesting bits. The brand is Mary Kay, and today I’m trying one of the products that I was given, a True Dimensions Lipstick in the shade Color Me Coral.

marykay-box

The True Dimensions  lipstick comes in a range of 16 different shades, containing all the usual gamut of nudes, reds, berries and so forth. there are two coral shades, this one, which is a pink coral, and an orange coral called coral bliss. Some of the catalog printed swatches like of mystic plum and sassy fuchsia do actually look really gorgeous, but lets see how I get on with this one first.

marykay-tube

The tube is really solid, and isn’t your standard half and half opening. To open this one you have to push down on the centre clear section at the top, to expose the bottom, and then pull the tube out. Unfortunately it didn’t come  with instructions to do this, so it did take me a minute to figure it out. One benefit of it though, is that it will not accidentally come apart in your bag, leading to coral coloured blotches everywhere.

marykay-product

The product itself is soft and creamy, so soft and creamy, that when I was running a brush over it before applying it earlier, I broke a small chunk off the back of it. It happens though, so I’ll get over it.

marykay-lips

And of course it wouldn’t be a Tried Tuesday without trying the product in it’s natural environment – on the lips, so here it is. This is after two coats, using a No. 7 lip brush. The first one was just a little sheer, but it is easily buildable into what I think is a great colour for summer days or the office.

Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipstick is £14, and is available from marykay.co.uk or one of their independent beauty consultants.

What do you think of this colour? Have you tried anything else from the Mary Kay Range? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Tested Thursday: Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick

tt-bourjois-thOn a recent post about the Wet n Wild Megalast liquid lipstick, there was a lot of love for the new offering from Bourjois, their Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick. Being the magpie that I am, I promptly bought one when I was in Boots the next day, and now have some thoughts to share on it. Please do read on.

bourjois tube

The shade I picked up was 05 – Olé Flamingo, a bright pink. As much as I love my reds and deeper colours, I have enough reds (for now, not outright) and darks and summer just don’t go. This really works for summer. The packaging is, well, nothing to write home about. It’s a slightly rounded square, clear tube, with a colour co-ordinated lid. Nothing fancy, but very solid. Not much to say about it, really.

bourjois wand

Inside the lid is a doefoot wand applicator, which is comfortable, soft and holds a perfectly suitable amount of product. It is as simple as 1 dip, 1 lip, 1 coat. No messing about trying to get enough product to work with. It also glides on to the lips beautifully, feeling rather creamy. Creamy lipsticks tend to be short lived though, right?

bourjois lips

Wrong. Here it is when I applied it at about 4pm yesterday, before going out to an event. About 7 hours later, after chats, eats, drinks, more chats and dinner, it was still there. There was some wear on the top lip, but the bottom lip was nearly perfect. That means we have a lipstick that looks good, feels creamy, dries matte, lasts and doesn’t dry out the lips. Well done Bourjois!

What do you think of Rouge Edition Velvet lipsticks? What other shades should I be buying? The comments await!

Lipstick Love: MAC Sheen Supreme in Quite The Thing

MAC LipstickI admit it. I do not really see the appeal of MAC. While they do some beautiful products, I think they are a little overpriced. That said, while out for lunch with Paula from Random Ramblings and Musings before Christmas, we found ourselves in the MAC Store on Henry St. ogling the lipstick selection. There was quite a bit of lust, and after some discussion, I was convinced to buy one (my first MAC product). And I have to tell you, I’m glad I did!
