Tested Thursday: Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream

bb-thI was going to title this post “My hand cream addiction continues” but it really is better to have the name of the product in there. In case you couldn’t guess though, this Tested Thursday post is about another hand cream. The previous contender from Inecto didn’t make the grade and has since found a new home with my sister, while I’ve moved on to the newest contender for go to hand cream, and the new contender is the Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream.

We start, of course with the packaging. Now, no prizes for guessing what is wrong with it. Yes, it’s a jar.  And here we have a little difficulty. It’s not a squeeze it out and rub it in tube. It’s a stick your fingers in it kind of deal, which is grand if you’re using it yourself and know your hands are clean in advance, but if someone wants to try it too and sticks their fingers in? Well, you see my conundrum. Get back and leave my jar alone!

bb-label

Looking at the label, it is proudly telling us that it is 100% natural, and gives a long list of exotic sounding ingredients including:

“prunus amygadalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, aqua (water), cera alba (beeswax), aloe barbadensis leaf juice…”

So, essentially it’s main ingredients are almond, water, beeswax and aloe vera. You can read the full list of Latin in the above picture, but to my limited knowledge, the natural claim stands up.

Getting into the actual product now, you open the lid with the cow on it (personally I would have expected a bee) to reveal the goodness within. First thing that hits you is the smell of almonds, but it is in no way overpowering. I actually find the smell quite pleasant. You then stick your finger in it and find out that it is almost solid. Yes, the beeswax in it causes it to set quite hard. Start swirling your finger across the top of it though, and it softens quite readily, but it does feel like having to handle too much product just to get a little bit of it.

And finally, after all that you have some product on your fingers, and get to rub it in to your hands. It does spread out really well, and starts to soak in almost instantly. It does feel as if you have a little film of product on your hands for a few minutes afterwards, but it dissipates quickly, and doesn’t feel sticky. I must also admit that I keep smelling my hands after using this, and both love how it smells and how it makes my hands feel.

So, what’s the verdict? This one comes really close to my L’Occitane one, in terms of smell and how it makes my hands feel. I’m really loving that. The bit I find almost unforgivable though, is the jar. It’s clumsy, it’s messy and it’s not portable. If they could make the formula a little more tube friendly, and then put it in a tube they would be right on the money, but unfortunately without that it is really a just leave it on my desk job, while y L’Occitane will go with me, and that’s a great pity.
