Manicure Monday: Champneys Nail Polish in Garnet

mm-garnet-thIt can be very difficult to enamour me with a red nail polish. I have a few I know and love, and I am fiercely loyal to them. But at the same time I am a blogger (or a collector, or a hoarder) and that means every so often I have to try another one. So, after having it on my desk for a long time, I finally got around to trying Garnet, from the Champneys Nail Polish collection.

This came as part of a set of six in a Christmas gift set in 2014. I picked it up in January 2015, when Boots were selling them off, and as it is more of an Autumn/Winter shade I didn’t do much outside swatching it for my nail polish board. It was time recently to start looking at those colours again (goodbye summer, we’ll miss all 3 days of you) and this was the one to try out.

The bottle, and the brush, is the same as that of the Max Factor Gel Shine Lacquers. I quite liked the brush of them, and I quite like the brush of this. The formula was workable, but, especially on the first coat, not very spreadable. It fared better on the second coat, but it really took three coats to really build up the colour intensity. I locked it in with a coat of their own base/top coat, which was part of the set.

Here’s how it looked.

I could be harsher on this, but I wont be. It is a nice enough colour. I quite like it, but I have similar from China Glaze. Obviously, with the CG being much more expensive, I expect, and get more out of it. This however, as a set of 6, had a box price of €15. I paid half that in the sale, so it was great value. It lasted 4 days before chipping too much to last any longer, and it looked good on my nails. If you are the kind of person who will gladly spend €20 plus on a single polish, you may choose to give these a miss. If you gotta have them all, or are buying as a gift for someone (that season is coming, y’know) then this is definitely something to consider. It’s not great, but it is certainly not bad either.

Something Else Saturday: Recent Purchases – Penneys, Boots, Lush & Parfois

SES-HaulthumbIt’s the weekend, the sun is shining, and it’s time for another Something Else Saturday. Last week I introduced you to Rascal, the one eyed psycho cat. This week, I’m showing you the bits and pieces I’ve bought recently.

I went in to Penneys for two things. A white vest (not pictured – it’s boring) and the Wet n Wild stand. I admit, I had picked out what I wanted from the stand before I even went to Penneys, so I must have looked a little crazy with my product brochure out, going between it and the stand. I’m just a little odd like that. It did get me most of what I wanted though, so I’m not complaining too much. I also poked around the other stands, liking the look of the NYC Color Rock Muse Smoky Top Coat. It’s red and glittery and wow.

Picked up, starting from top l-r:

  • Wet n Wild ColorIcon lip liner in Plumberry
  • Wet n Wild Wild Shine in Black Creme
  • Wet n Wild Fast Dry in Sage and the City
  • Wet n Wild Fast Dry in Gray’s Anatomy
  • NYC Color Rock Must Smoky Top Coat in Red Hot
  • Wet n Wild Megalast Lipstick in Sugar Plum Fairy
  • Wet n Wild Wild Shine in Eggplant Frost
  • Wet n Wild Meglast Lipstick in Cherry Bomb
  • Wet n Wild ColorIcon Eyeshadow Trio in Silent Treatment
  • Wet n Wild ColorIcon glitter single eyeshadow in Binge
  • Wet n Wild Idol Eyes shadow pencil in Techno

Also from Penneys is a pair of exfoliating gloves. Just because they’re scrubby, body cleaningly good.

From Boots I got a set of Eyelure Naturalites super full lashes. Mainly because I had a load of receipts with Advantage Card points on, and didn’t want to queue up with just them. I’ve also only recently got the hang of lashes, so I chose to treat myself to some.

From the place of all interesting smells and colours and natural bath goodness that is Lush, I got three things, mostly not for me.

haul-brightsideFor me, I got the Brightside bubble bar. It smells gorgeous, looks like a 60’s tie-dye t-shirt, and should encourage me to make time for a bath (lock the bathroom door and to hell with everyone waiting).

For someone else, who should be receiving them next weekend, I got products that look like food. I got a bunch of carrots, which are soooo cute, and a French kiss, in all its floaty, meringue like glory. I now just need to figure out quirky packaging for them. Maybe I’ll plant the carrots, and serve the meringue with a plate of meringue. I’ll just need to put a flag on it saying don’t eat me. That wouldn’t end well.

Finally, I went in to Parfois on Mary St. I had stopped and looked in the window many times before, but never gone in. I’m not sure if I made a mistake by going in or not. There is so much loveliness in there. My old wallet has seen better days, and is starting to leech colour on to cards. Not a good look. I walked around the shop for a couple of minutes comparing wallets, before being stopped by a member of staff. She compared the tow I had in my hands with me, before asking me a couple of questions about how big I’d like my wallet to be, and recommending a cross between a wallet and a clutch.

And it was beautiful. It has space for everything and an elephant, and the member of staff was so friendly I had no problem with her upselling. And the upsell was only €2 from what I was going to buy, so it was all good. Even more, she went back and forth to the stock room 3 times to find one that had no marks or imperfections whatsoever. Customer service win right there. I may be back for more very soon.

What have you bought recently? Have I inspired you to buy anything from this post? You know what to do!
