Face Friday: Magazine Inspired Red & Gold Christmas Look

ff-redgold-thLast week, while reading through a magazine, I saw two looks that combined elements of red & gold. It stuck with me, and I wondered if I could create something of a Christmas party look inspired by it. Well, I gave it a go, and the results are here for you today for Face Friday.

inspiration

Here are the looks that I drew inspiration from, which come from the December issue of Cosmopolitan. I was particularly taken by two elements, the gold eyes from the left, and the gold cupids bow and red lips on the right. It’s these elements that I wanted to combine into one look, so after scrubbing, cleansing, toning, moisturising and putting on a ton of lip balm, I went through my collection and took out the following to be used in creating the look:

Face:

  • Primer: Benefit – The Porefessional
  • Foundation: Max Factor – Skin Luminizer Foundation (40 – Light Ivory)
  • Blush: Benefit – Benetint
  • Blush: Benefit – Hervana
  • Highlighter: MeMeMe – Beat The Blues (Pearl Pink)
  • Contour: Wet n Wild – Coloricon Bronzer (E740 – Bikini Contest)
  • Powder: Benefit – Hello Flawless (Ivory)
  • Concealer: Benefit – FakeUp (01 – Light)

Eyes:

  • Brows: NYX – Eyebrow Cake Powder (04 – Auburn/Red)
  • Primer: Makeup Revolution – Focus + Fix Primer (Brighten)
  • Pigment: Barry M – Fine Glitter Dust (10 – Yellow Gold)
  • Shadow: Makeup Revolution – Awesome Eyeshadow Collection (Various Golds & Silver)
  • Liner: Paese – Liquid Eyeliner (Black)
  • Mascara: Physicians Formula – Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara (Fakeout)

Lips:

  • Lipliner: Revlon – Colorstay Liner (Red)
  • Lipstick: L’Oreal – Color Riche Lipstick (297 – Red Passion)
  • Gold Lip Line: Essence – Effect Eyeliner (02 – Gold Digger) topped with Barry M – Fine Glitter Dust (10 – Yellow Gold)

Brushes:

  • Blank Canvas – F20 – Foundation
  • Blank Canvas – F16 – Powder
  • Real Techniques – Setting Brush – Blush (Apply/Blend)
  • Real Techniques – Pointed Foundation Brush – Apply Contour
  • Blank Canvas – F03 – Blend together blush/highlighter/contour
  • Blank Canvas – E24, E25, E32 – Shadows
  • Blank Canvas – E30 – Undereye shadow/comb lashes
  • Ecotools – Angled Liner Brush – Brows
  • Blank Canvas – L29 – Lipstick
  • Emite Make Up – L312 – Pigment on upper lip line

That is quite a list of products and brushes to work through, but Christmas is a time for going all out. And to answer the question of what all of this gets you in the end, here it is:

Now, I’ll freely admit I was a little forgetful, and forgot to do photos using flash, which is a pity, as it would really show off the eyes. The glitter pigment used will really make your eyes sparkle, and the combination of red and gold is a classic. The addition of silver in the corner of the eyes added another dimension to them, giving a bit more colour depth, while the mascara created great lashes without resorting to potentially over the top falsies. The only thing I am slightly concerned about is the gold along the top lip, which may have benefited from a liquid gold. I felt that in the minute amount I used, it was just slightly lacking. Not awful looking, but not stand out. I think that once I have somewhere to go that isn’t a hospital, I will be redoing this look and actually showing it off. In fact, I may just have the perfect matching manicure to show off for you on Monday.

What do you think of this look? Would you go for a gold lined lip, or should it be left to editorial makeup? And am I using enough glitter? The comments await!

Face Friday: Tropical Face

facce-thAfter not having a Face Friday last week I decided something must be done this week for it. For this, I’ve been working on a quite minimal face with a tropical theme. This means lots of corals are involved, along with some other light colours.

face-eyesopen

face-eyesclosed

Face:

  • Tinted Moisturiser: MeMeMe – Flawless Tinted Moisturiser (02 – Beige Blush)
  • Powder: Mary Kay – Sheer Dimensions Powder (Lace Coral)
  • Blush: Benefit – Cha Cha Tint
  • Blush: Benefit – Coralista

Eyes:

  • Brows: Maybelline – Brow Drama (Medium Brown)
  • Shadow: butter LONDON – Wink Cream Shadow – Lid (Sun Kiss)
  • Undereye: Shiseido – Sheer Eyezone Corrector (103 Natural)
  • Liner: Rimmel – SpecialEyes Mono Shadow – Used Wet (244 Moonstone)
  • Mascara: Mary Kay – Ultimate Mascara (Black)

Lips:

  • Lipstick: Mary Kay – True Dimensions Lipstick (Color Me Coral)

Brushes:

  • Real Techniques – Multi Task Brush – Blush
  • Real Techniques – Buffing Brush – Powder
  • Blank Canvas – E30 – Liner (Lid)
  • Royal & Langnickel – C260 Taklon Shadow Brush – Eyeshadow (Blend between shadow & liner)
  • No. 7 – Lip Brush – Lipstick

I really like the minimalistic, yet colourful look that this creates. It’s also the first time that I’ve done a white liner, and while I don’t have an actual white liner, the wet shadow did a lovely job. I love how that turned out, and may have to invest in an actual liner for it.

pf-face-thIt’s Friday and that means it’s time for another face. This one is actually similar but more ramped up than last weeks face, which was more minimalistic, and was what I used to go to the launch of Physicians Formula on Wednesday evening. I was looking for something that wouldn’t really move, but was still light. Inevitably some of my face did move a little, but the heat in the room was unreal!

Tested Thursday: Benefit They’re Real Mascara

tt-theyrereal-thThere are some products in the beauty world that massively polarise opinion. One of them is the subject of today’s Tested Thursday. It’s a definite Marmite product (you either love it or hate it).  Today’s Tested Thursday is a mascara by Benefit. It’s called They’re Real, and the question I’m here to answer is do I love it, or do I hate it.

theyrereal-tube

Firstly, I’m not enamoured by the marketing material for it. If there wasn’t a small picture of the mascara there I wouldn’t ever tie the ad poster to a beauty product, and even then, it’s ambiguous. Fortunately, I’m not reviewing the advertising. I’m reviewing the mascara itself, which, according to the box resulted in tests of 94% seeing dramatic length and volume, 90% seeing base to tip curl, 94% seeing visible lift and 100% seeing long wearing results. A mascara that does all that, and makes tea too? (not really) They claim too that the special brush, which you use horizontally, then vertically, is a wonder tool.

theyrereal-brush

Let’s look at the brush for a second. Here it is, in all its rubbery spikiness. Note particularly the spiky bit on the end, which you use to curl and separate the lashes. Yes, that bit that seems to be coated in a massive amount of mascara. This is where things get a bit iffy. You do your mascara thing normally, holding the brush horizontally, wiggling it a bit as you draw it from root to tip. Then you are meant to hold the brush vertically and stroke the lashes upwards to add curl and separate. And well, it does work… Kinda. You have to be quite careful here, partly to avoid poking yourself in the eye, and partly to ensure you don’t over coat the lashes with the mascara that gathers on the end. It does add a bit of extra curl, but if you overdo it, all the extra mascara on the end has a tendency to start sticking lashes together in to clumps, which is never a good look. Layering it, while it works, and does add extra oomph to your lashes, is also tricky, again due to adding so much more mascara and the risk of clumping. I’ve never tried going beyond 2 coats, just because I fear it clumping too much and having to start again, which brings me on to my next good/bad point. When this thing sets, it DOES. NOT. MOVE! It’s great in wear, as it is not going to transfer or run down your cheeks (though some people do note flakiness), but when it comes to removal, it is a battle. Your Nima Mitt/Cleanse Off Mitt/similar will not do a job on this. You will need to break out the big guns, and be prepared for both a struggle, and to be panda eyed while you try to get the whole lot off your eyes.

theyrereal-eyes

Finally, no review would be complete without seeing it on the eyes. This is a 1 coat picture (mascara on the right), and it does a good job. It, to me, does add some curl, and a bit of length and volume. You can build it a bit more for a night out, but this is a daytime picture. I can understand how this polarises opinion. It is not the easiest product to use, but when it works for you you get excellent results. It also shows how one product can work for one person, and not for another. But to answer the love it or hate it question, for me, I love it.

They’re Real costs €26, and is available from Benefit counters nationwide.

Note: In answer to the Marmite question – I hate it.

Face Friday: The Fast Face

fff-fastth“This is for the woman who only has four fifths of a second to get ready” – Homer Simpson.
Fortunately, I don’t have a Simpsons style makeup gun, but I, like others, have often ended up in situations where I have no time to get ready, but still have to. That’s why, for Face Friday today, I’m doing the Fast Face. The idea being to use products I have, to get myself looking presentable in as short a time as possible, and to show off the result. Scared? Me too…

The clock starts now…

ff-Face

Face: Three products used.

  • BB Cream: Osiris Avise BB Cream in light (I got this one in Dealz, but they’re usually available in Lidl) Applied with fingers.
  • Powder: Benefit Hello Flawless in Ivory. Applied with the included brush
  • Blush: Benefit Hervana. Applied with the included brush

Time taken: Approx 2:38, mostly on the BB cream.

FF-Eyes

Eyes: Three Products used.

  • Shadow: Accessorize baked shadow duo in Freya. Applied with an Ecotools Fluffy Shadow Brush
  • Brows: Maybelline Brow Drama in Medium Brown. Applied with the included brush
  • Mascara: NYC High Definition Mascara. Applied with the included brush

Time taken: Approx 2:15

FF-Lips

Lips: Two products used.

  • Base colour: Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain in Passion. Applied using marker tip from tube
  • Gloss: L’Oreal Glamshine in Tart Lollipop (from Miss Candy Collection). Applied with included applicator

Time taken: Approx 1:13

Total time taken: 6:06.63 start to finish

And the result looks like.

ff-done

It’s definitely not the best I’ve done, but it is also definitely passable. I specifically chose products that were virtually foolproof, and for the most part could be applied with fingers or an included applicator. The only exception being the eyeshadow, which needed a brush. Having a plan to do a face in double quick time is always a plus, and can get you out of a few tight spots. Of course this can be trimmed down a bit further, if for example, you are willing to do your lips on the go.

What do you think? How fast can you do a fast face, and do you have any tips? I’d love to find out in the comments.

Tried Tuesday: Benefit BADgal Lash

tt-badgalthIt’s a lovely Tried Tuesday on Robyn Rants and Raves, and I was outside for a bit, which is why I’m only doing this in the evening. Gotta enjoy the sunshine while we can though. For today’s Tried Tuesday I’m looking at a mascara. It’s by Benefit, and it’s called BADgal Lash.

BadGal-Tube

I’ll be honest. I’ve never been fully convinced by this. Not enough to go and buy a full sized one anyway. I’ve picked them up on occasion when they’ve been available as freebies with magazines. I’ve found it nice, but not overwhelming. I have good days with it, and I have bad days. The thing is I just don’t know what to make of it, unlike it’s sister, They’re Real, which I adore (even if it too gets a bit moody at times).

Badgal-Brush

The brush is thick and densely packed, and the formula is creamy without being overly wet. I can’t see anything wrong with it on that description. We may as well have a look at it actually on lashes. Pictures are shown in order of no mascara, 1 coat, and 2 coats.

Badgal-none

Badgal-1coat

Badgal-2coat

Don’t get me wrong, it looks nice, but it’s not super voluminous, and there are other products out there that do the same job, but cheaper. Am I being overly harsh? Is there something I’m doing wrong? Should I actually pick up a full size one, or just keep getting them as magazine freebies?

Face Friday: Out Shopping

FaceFriday-thSo, yesterday I went shopping. Not for anything in particular. More to get out and about for a bit. And seeing as I couldn’t go barefaced for fear of scaring small children, I wanted something that looked done, but not too overdone.

FaceFriday-Bg

Face:

  • Primer: GOSH – Velvet Touch Line Perfector
  • Primer: Benefit – The Porefessional (used on nose)
  • Foundation: Maybelline – Superstay 24 Hour Foundation (020 – Cameo)
  • Bronzer: Wet ‘ Wild – Coloricon Bronzer (Ticket to Brazil)
  • Blush: Benefit – Hervana
  • Powder: 17 – Loose Powder (translucent)

Eyes:

  • Brows: Maybelline – Brow Drama (Medium Brown)
  • Shadow: Benefit – Creaseless Cream Shadow (RSVP – from World Famous Neutrals (Easiest Nudes) palette)
  • Shadow: Benefit – Powder Shadow – crease (Thanks a Latte – from World Famous Neutrals (Easiest Nudes) palette)
  • Shadow: Benefit – Powder Shadow – on brow bone (Call my Buff  – from World Famous Neutrals (Easiest Nudes) palette)
  • Liner: Model Co – Eye liner pencil (01 – Black, free with April 2014 issue of Glamour)
  • Mascara: No. 7 – Fanomonal Lashes Mascara (black)

Lips:

  • Stain: Revlon – Colourburst Matte Balm (220 – Showy)

Brushes:

  • Blank Canvas – F20 – Foundation
  • Ecotools – Powder Brush – Powder
  • Real Techniques – Pointed Foundation Brush – Bronzer (contour)
  • Real Techniques – Multi Task Brush – Bronzer & Blush
  • Real Techniques – Essential Crease Brush – Cream Eyeshadow
  • Blank Canvas – E24 – Powder Shadow

I think this look was ideal for daytime shopping, as it didn’t look too overdone, even if it did take me 20 minutes to do!

I also notice my lips look a bit dry under the lip colour. Back to lots of lip scrub and balm it is.

Face Friday: Cocoa Brown Event

FF-thWelcome to Face Friday, where I plan to show off my best face of the week with a list of products and brushes used. Quite simple really!

Today’s face comes from the Cocoa Brown Spring Launch Event, held in the Vintage Cocktail Club.

ff-bg

Face:

  • Primer: GOSH – Velvet Touch Line Perfector
  • Primer: Benefit – The Porefessional (used on nose)
  • Foundation: Maybelline – Fit Me Foundation (125 – Nude Beige)
  • Bronzer: Wet ‘ Wild – Coloricon Bronzer (Ticket to Brazil)
  • Blush: MUA – Blusher (Shade 1)
  • Powder: 17 – Loose Powder (translucent)

Eyes:

  • Brows: Maybelline – Brow Drama (Medium Brown)
  • Shadow: Benefit – Creaseless Cream Shadow (Flash – from Eye Gotta palette)
  • Shadow: Benefit – Powder Shadow (Purple Haze – from Eye Gotta palette)
  • Liner: Model Co – Eye liner pencil (01 – Black, free with April 2014 issue of Glamour)
  • Mascara: None
  • Lashes: Eyelure – Sex and the City lashes (Carrie)

Lips:

  • Stain: Revlon – Just Bitten Lip Stain (Gothic)
  • Gloss: Shiseido – Lacquer Gloss (RD305 – Lust)

Brushes:

  • Blank Canvas – F20 – Foundation
  • Blank Canvas – F03 – Powder
  • Real Techniques – Pointed Foundation Brush – Bronzer (contour)
  • Real Techniques – Multi Task Brush – Bronzer & Blush
  • Blank Canvas – E23 – Cream Eyeshadow
  • Blank Canvas – E32 – Powder Shadow
  • Blank Canvas – E30 Spoolie end – comb lashes and false lashes together

I didn’t use mascara, and the false lashes added enough intensity, and it makes it easier for me to reuse them.

I think the whole thing fit together quite well for a vintage(ish) look. What do you think?

(Extremely Rare) FOTD, Just Because

FOTD-thAs a rule, I hate pictures of myself. They just never look nice enough to me. However, on rare occasions, I hit upon a good one. And in this case, I think it’s a really good one. That’s why I’m sharing an extremely rare FOTD with you, though at this stage it’s more like a Face of 2 days ago. Anyway, never mind that. Lets get on to the more interesting bit of products used.

FOTD-Bg

Face:

  • Primer: GOSH – Velvet Touch Line Perfector
  • Primer: Benefit – The Porefessional (used on nose)
  • Foundation: Maybelline – SuperStay 24 Hour Foundation (020 – Cameo)
  • Bronzer: Wet ‘ Wild – Coloricon Bronzer (Ticket to Brazil)
  • Blush: Benefit – Hervana
  • Concealer: Benefit – FakeUp (light)
  • Powder: 17 – Loose Powder (translucent)

Eyes:

  • Brows: Maybelline – Brow Drama (Medium Brown)
  • Shadow: Benefit – Creaseless Cream Shadow (Birthday Suit)
  • Shadow: No. 7 – Stay Perfect Eye Shadow (Truffle)
  • Liner: L’Oreal – Gel Intenza Liner (02 – Golden Black)
  • Mascara: Benefit – They’re Real

Lips:

  • Gloss: Shiseido – Lacquer Gloss (RD305 – Lust)

Brushes:

  • Blank Canvas – F20 – Foundation
  • Blank Canvas – F03 – Powder
  • Real Techniques – Setting Brush – Bronzer (contour)
  • Ecotools – Powder Brush – Bronzer & Blush
  • Blank Canvas – E23 – Cream Eyeshadow
  • Royal & Langnickel – Silk Taklon Shadow C260 – Powder Eyeshadow
  • Blank Canvas – E28 – Liner
  • Blank Canvas – E30 Spoolie end – comb lashes between mascara coats
  • Blank Canvas – L29 – Lip brush (shape & definition)

Thinking about it, that’s quite a list for a doing nothing in particular face, but I like how it worked out.

Any thoughts? Anyone? Feel free to  tell me not to show my face on my blog again in the comments.
