Something Else Saturday: Makeup Revolution Haul

ses-revolution-thI was fortunate enough that on Friday the postman arrived with a package. Just a small package of bits from Makeup Revolution, the young gogetter company from England, who only recently celebrated their first birthday. As they had an offer on to celebrate, where if you spent £25 or more you got freebies worth £26, I felt it would be wrong not to try some bits and pieces. This is what arrived.

selection

The haul in all its glory

There’s only 17 items there. Not a lot really, but to make it easier to work through, I’m going to break it down into sections. We shall start with face products.

FACE:

Ultra All Day Prime & Anti-Shine Balm (£5):

Primer compact

I ran out of primer recently, so this was a good choice to try a different one. It is tidy, compact and comes with an applicator sponge.

Blushing Hearts Triple Baked Blusher – Blushing Heart (£4.99):

Seriously, how cute is this. I may never use it, it looks so adorable, but I do like how there are three shades included in it.

Vivid Blush Lacquer – O’ Boy (£1.99)

This is a liquid blush with a pump lid, but I will caution you now. Be gentle. This thing is seriously pigmented. I can still see some on my hand from where I touched it on the sheet I was using earlier.

LIPS:

These are glossy lipsticks with an inner colour core surrounded in an Argan Oil jelly outer. They look like you would have to reapply them often, but your lips would be super comfortable wearing them.

#Liphug – I think you’re amazing (£2.50):

A product named after its own hashtag! A mix of comfort, colour and staying power, it is probably not a shade I would have picked for myself, but I do love the name, and I think I’m amazing too!

Lip Power – Can’t Escape Me & Anticipate It (£3):

I do like rooting through my lip drawer for glosses to put on top of lipsticks, and here we have them perfectly matched up into one pack. There’s also two completely different shades here, a vibrant pink and a dark, almost vampy berry.

EYES:

I Heart Makeup Eye Primer – Matte (£2.99):

A large tube of the matte version of the I Heart Makeup Eye Primer. I find myself reaching for the Focus & Fix primer a lot lately, so it will be interesting to see how the two stablemates compare to each other.

Amazing Volume Mascara – Ultra Black (£2):

I’m always confused by products that come in black and beyond black (in this case ultra black) but I can see beyond that. It does also come in a waterproof version, and the brush looks quite nice. I am interested to see if it can do what it says!

Pure Pigments – Levity & Starless (£1):

Pigment Jars. Levity (l) Starless (r)

Swatches. Levity (l) Starless (r)

I already have one of these (a sparkly brown called Grandeur) and happily added Levity, the pinky purple to my basket. As part of the free gift I received the sparkly black, Starless, and… Another Levity. I am guessing the free gift packs were pre picked, and it is luck of the draw, but I am not complaining either way. When applied over a primer to give them something to cling to, these guys pack serious power.

Baked Eyeshadow – Electric Dreams (£2.50):

Baked Shadow Box

Electric Dreams Shadows

Electric Dreams Shadows

Swatching these was a little more difficult than some of the other shadows, mainly as the baking process leaves them a bit drier than normal, and then working dry onto a dry surface is awkward. There is a hint to how pigmented these are, and built onto a primer or worked wet, these could be beautiful! I am also giving away my love of purple here 😉

Palettes:

Here’s the piece de resistance! Three palettes that in most cases do almost everything, and the other is just too spectacular to include in the eye section. Starting with:

I Am Naked (£5.99):

6 neutral eyeshadows, and a nude lipstick, in 1 cute portable set. It’s all there, ready to go for whenever I want to get naked (stop sniggering, Cat ;-))

Go! To The City (£6.49):

Salvation Palette – Give Them Nightmares (£6):

12 shimmer shades and 6 matte, at 33p per shadow. That and, well look at it. How gorgeous is everything, EVERYTHING to do with this palette. Never mind nightmares, this is like my dream palette!

So, that is my haul. A lot of fun to be had with it, but tell me, what caught your eye out of everything here?

Tried Tuesday: Max Factor Excess Intensity Eyeliners

tt-excess-intensity-thMax Factor seem to be all about the eyes at the moment, and are all for going to excess, with their recent launch of the Excess Shimmer eyeshadow pots, and this forthcoming launch, scheduled for January 2015, of complimentary eyeliners, which are being added to the Excess Intensity line of eyeliners, making a total of 9 shades. Fortunately, today for Tried Tuesday, I have swatches of the new range, to help you find out if they are excessively intense, or just a korma in a vindaloo world (I have no idea why I’m using that as an analogy).

excess-intensity-tubes

The three new shades are a green, purple and blue, shades called Excessive Jade, Excessive Violet and Excessive Cobalt. They come in the form of a pencil inside a twistable pen applicator. As you twist the pen it clicks and pushes the pencil up that little bit further. Nothing new there but it works, as long as you remember to not twist too much, as you can’t retract it. It is also handy to have the colour coded lid, as it is the only way at a glance that you can tell which colour is which. The only other difference in the pens is the shade number, but I’m glad the lids match up for when I am rooting around in my collection for them.

excess-intensity-tips

Here we see a close up of the tips. Yes, they are squared off in this picture, which is how they were produced, but once you start working with them it will round out nicely. You can also get an idea of the intensity of the colour, but the best way to see that is in a swatch…

excess-intensity-swatches

And here it is. Intense is right, particularly for the punchy Jade shade, which combines intensity and shine, and would be my pick of the bunch, especially for those with hazel/brown eyes. The other two, while they are intensely coloured, seem to me to be a bit dull in the swatch here, but I definitely see myself using the purple anyway, for one particular reason. They are incredibly soft and glide, once you get across the top layer, which in my swatching them was slightly dry and crumbly. Once I got beyond that though, it was butter soft. That leads me to my one problem and recommendation. As it is such a soft liner, it breaks easily if you have too much of it exposed. This would just lead to wasting it, if the bits are too small to do anything meaningful with. You are better off putting up just enough to get you going, and twisting up more as you need it, which isn’t difficult.

Max Factor Excess Intensity Eyeliners in Excessive Jade, Excessive Violet and Excessive Cobalt will be on Max Factor Stands from January 2015.

What do you think of these? Are they a great way to add colour pops to eyes? Do you prefer pencil style liners, or something different? Please let us know in the comments :-)

New Launches: Physicians Formula Comes To Ireland

stand of happinessIn June something amazing is happening. A US brand is coming to Ireland. A brand famous for its bronzers, powders, minerals, and for being natural. Finally, Physicians Formula is coming to Ireland.

Founded in 1937 by eminent Allergist Dr. Frank Crandall, solely to cope with his wife’s sensitive skin, Physicians Formula has grown into a megabrand, and has been credited with a number of firsts, including being the first company to create a line of hypo-allergenic makeup, the first to introduce SPF to makeup, and they develop over 50 new products each year! I was lucky enough to be invited to the press launch last night, and armed with my trusty camera, I can now show you some of the beauties that we have to look forward to!

For a brand that promises so much from its products, you would expect more high end prices, but prices range from €10.90 for the Eye Definer Felt Tip Eye Marker, to €20 for the Cashmere Wear Ultra-Smoothing Bronzer, and most products fall in to the €15-€18 price range. That gets even better when I say that the majority of the eyeliners are sold as a pack of 3 complimentary colours, which will cost you €16.90, or the equivalent of €5.63 each!

happyboosterblush

Some of my favourite items seen on the night include this Happy Booster blush, which, aside from looking amazing, contains mood boosting pheromones, to, well, make you feel happier. And seriously, how pretty is this? I heart it so much!

ph matchmaker gloss

Another brilliant idea comes from their PH Matchmaker range, in both their lipglosses and blush/bronzers. The blush and bronzer compacts have two tiny LED lights either side of the mirror, while the lipglosses have a mirror on the side of the tube, and a flashlight. No more trying to apply lipgloss in the back of a dark taxi!

sexy booster bronzer

Finally I have to point out the beauty of the packaging, which is just inspiring. Particularly look at this organic wear Mascara and Sexy Booster Bronzer (the shade of the bronzer didn’t come out right, but look at the gorgeousness of the lace and shoe!)

Possibly My Ultimate Red Lip… Shiseido Lacquer Gloss

shiseido-thGather round boys and girls and let me tell you a tale. A tale of lips, and red, and trying to find the right match between the two. Now obviously, I can’t really change my lips that much, but I can find the right red to go with my lips as they are. And by golly, I think I’ve done just that.

How? With the little beauty that is one of Shiseido’s recently released new Lacquer Gloss shades, in this case “Lust” (RD305) which they describe as a sultry blood red. Sultry is right. I defy anyone to not be entranced by this colour! It is really amazing. The applicator holds a huge amount of product, and glides across lips. My instant reaction when it first hit my lips was to stop what I was doing and exclaim WOW! It was the deepest, glossiest red I have ever used, and feels super smooth and velvety on the lips.

shiseido applicator

And now, for those of you who are still reading this, you get to see it actually on my lips.

shiseido lips

The new shades are now on Shiseido counters and cost €25.

So, what do you think of the colour? Have you found your ultimate red? Let me know in the comments!

First Impressions: Wet n Wild Cosmetics

WnW-thUnless you’ve been living in a cave in the back o’ beyond, and the only tweets you’ve been getting have been from actual birds, you must have heard that US giant Wet n Wild are now available in Ireland. I’ve been trying out a few products and can now share my thoughts on them with you.

The Bright: ColorIcon Blush in Heather Silk:

wnw blush

For €4.49 this is so unbelieveably pigmented. You really need a light touch with this to avoid the dreaded Bosco cheeks! I did overcook it the first time, but had enough foundation left on my brush to tone it down a bit. Lucky me. This is not a good look, ever!

The Subtle: ColorIcon Bronzer in Ticket To Brazil:

wnw bronzer

This is subtle enough that you can use it without being scared of it. I’m normally scared of contouring in case it goes badly wrong with a dark colour, but I can use this one knowing it is subtle enough for me to practice with without making a mess of my face. Also, look at the size of that whopper, all for €4.99.

The Somewhat Disappointing: XXL Lash Mascara:

wnw mascara tube

I’ll be honest, after seeing good things about this mascara I was a little disappointed. It’s billedas a “thickening, amplifying mascara” but what I found was the formula was so wet it did nothing for me, and ended up everywhere but on my lashes. Maybe given a couple of weeks drying time it will be a bit better, but for now, it’s a no from me, even for €5.49.

wnw mascara brush

The must go and buy: Megalast lipstick in Cherry Bomb:

I don’t have a picture of this, but I tried it on during the launch party, and it is amazing. Really gorgeous colour, and it lasts really well. Great for €2.99

Also on my shopping list is a few nail polishes. Having swatched a couple they really are gorgeously pigmented.

Speaking of nails. Here’s some cack-handed nail art I did for the launch night!

So, what do you think of Wet n Wild? What else should be on my shopping list? Let me know!

New Launches: Shiseido S/S ’14

shiseido-thI’ll be honest. This post is going to make you ooh and aah, and will probably give your bank manager a heart attack. Why? It’s the gorgeous new launches from Japanese beauty giant Shiseido. Ladies (and gentlemen) prepare to want, no, NEED, everything!

Skincare:

Shiseido know skincare, and they employ more than 1,100 scientists to research the way skin works, and how to use skins natural mechanisms in their products. The latest results of that research have led to:

Future Solutions LX Range:

  • Superior Radience Serum (30ml/€270)
  • Total Protective Emulsion (75ml/€290)
  • Total Regenerating Body Cream (200ml/€130)

Shiseido-FSLXThese are amazing. I’m particularly enamoured by the serum. A tiny dot on the back of my hand was more than enough to cover my hand, and it sank in instantly, leaving my hand looking so much brighter. Without going into all the science of it (Pearl Hybrid Complex and Skingenecell 1P in this case) it is  like liquid light for the skin. I’m going to have to start saving my pennies for this one.

Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask (12 pack/€63)

Shiseido-Benefiance

This is an update to the well known and unbelievably popular cult product, which now features stabilised pure retinol and Makruossi Extract, which works to replump the undereye area, reducing wrinkles, fine lines and dark circles. While some people use it as a once a month treat, it is safe to use up to 3 times a week.

IBUKI Starter Set (3x30ml/€29)

Shiseido-Ibuki

I’m really looking forward to trying this one out, and even the box wants me to try it out. It even told me!

Shiseido-IbukiM

A limited edition set containing 30 ml sizes of Cleanser, Softener and Moisturiser, it is designed to give you a 2 week to 1 month introduction to the world of Shiseido Skincare.

Makeup:

Face Colour Enhancing Trio (4 shades/€38 ea)

Shiseido-Blush

The great variety of shades available really allow this to work with any skin tone, even my pasty, pale Irish skin. Containing 3 complimentary shades in each compact, which act as a blush, sculpting colour and skin harmonising colour. These also have a subtle shimmer, to add a healthy glow. A really lovely product, I can see this one disappearing very quickly.

Lacquer Rouge & Lacquer Gloss (new shades) (€26/€25)

shiseido-lg

Shiseido-lr

My personal favourites from all the makeup launches, I am really in love with these. They are both super pigmented, with the Lacquer Rouge offering a deeper hit of colour, while the Lacquer Gloss is like a lip gloss plus. I need more of these in my life!

Shiseido-lg2

Shimmering Cream Eye Colour (8 new shades) (€29)

Shiseido-eye

These are water resistant, crease resistant, and last FOREVER. After swatching them on my hands they refused to move, until I scrubbed the life out of them before going to bed. They are some of the most gorgeous cream shadows I have ever come across, and with the colours being so intense, you’ll be noticed.

Sheer Eye Zone Corrector ( 3 shades) (€30)

Shiseido-Eyezone

These at first glance look like the very familiar Touche Eclat in function, but with these the trick is to go for the one that loooks orange on your skin, as the boffins in Shiseido have discovered that everyone as they age lose red and yellow pigments from their under eye area. This puts them back in, and helps to disguise fine lines. You can also pick up the one that looks the lightest on your skin, to add highlight and radience.

Sun Care UV Protective Compact Foundation & Liquid Foundation (3 shades each) (€39) – not pictured

These foundations are perfect for holidays, as they both contain SPF30. Depending on whether you want a matte or more dewy finish you choose the compact or liquid finish. They also DO NOT MOVE! Get them wet, swim, sunbathe, whatever you need to do and it stays on your face! Result!

Perfect Hydrating BB Cream (new light shade)  (€38) – not pictured

This is definitely a “my skin but better” product, and the light shade should be excellent for most Irish skintones. It also contains SPF30 (woo!) and provides added skincare protection!

Fragrance:

Zen Sun EdT for men, and for women (50ml/€63)

Shiseido-Zen

The fragrance for men is a wonderfully fresh crisp fragrance. The fragrance for women is the perfect sweet fragrance for those who hate sweet fragrances. I despise the usual, sickly sweet, sweet fragrances, but after getting one sniff of this, I MUST HAVE it. That’s the best way I can put it. I’m not really one for perfume descriptions.

For Men:

Total Revitaliser Eye (15ml/€54) – no pictured

For the man who keeps raiding your supplies, make him buy his own. This is really rich but spreads and sinks in so well. It is also  encased in sleek black packaging, so it looks perfectly masculine, and therefore ideal for the man who doesn’t want to be caught using “girly” products.

These wonderful goodies are on counter between now and May, including the new Shiseido counter in Harvey Nichols, Dundrum.

I also have some of them to try out and will be reporting back in good time to let you know how I got on.

What jumps out at you? Are you regretting reading this far? How’s your bank balance feeling? Let me know in the comments!
